Just recently, I found out about the Prudential Relationship Index 2017 in Malaysia and it got me thinking long and hard about my relationship with my loved ones. Be it my parents, the spouse, or my children, we all have our own issues and ups and downs. Hence the irony in all of this, on one hand, we know it’s healthy, on the other, there will be moments where it gets too heated up. Read on below on my take on the results of the Prudential Relationship Index 2017.

What is Prudential Relationship Index and What does it Mean?

The Prudential Relationship Index (PRI) is a study to find out what matters most in personal relationships throughout Asia. Prudential has conducted the PRI study in 2017 and 2016.

How do you fare?

A score of 100 on the PRI indicates that a person’s primary relationships deliver 100% of what they want from that relationship. In Malaysia, 516 interviews were conducted through the online sampling of adults between 25 and 55 years of age living in Kuala Lumpur or Petaling Jaya.

The 2017 Prudential Relationship Index for Malaysia is 68/100

The 2017 Prudential Relationship Index for Malaysia is 68/100. This means, on average, people’s primary relationships fulfil 68% of their desired needs. On the flip side, these results reveal a 32% “relationship gap” in Malaysia. The score for 2017 is a three-point drop from Malaysia’s score in 2016 (68/100).

My Relationship with the Spouse

For starters, my relationship with the spouse have been pretty strained recently due to a number of factors, with finance being a part of it. It’s with great interest then that I look into what the Prudential Relationship Index shows. Do you plan for the future? 43% of Malaysians consult with a financial services professional to manage their finances. 57% agree that working with a financial agent to plan their finances makes their relationships better.

My Relationship with My Parents

Personally, I would like to share how much I appreciate and love my mother for bringing me up, and till now, she is living with me, helping to care for my children. Her name is Evelyn Wooi, and I know for a fact that without her help and care, I would have been so lost. Of course, that does not discount my dad, as he is a very important figure in my life as well. I feel so blessed that until now, I still have both their full support in whatever decisions I make in my life.

The 2017 relationship scores that Malaysians have with their parents is 47/100, one point lower than in 2016. This indicates that among those with living parents, approximately 47% of their relationship needs are provided for by their parents. The average parent relationship scores for the countries surveyed in 2017 is 48/100.

Relationships with Parents

As in 2016, the most important attribute that Malaysians look for in their parents is for them to provide support. 76% want their parents to stand up for them – the most important attribute both in 2017 and 2016. Malaysians also want their parents to respect their individuality and to be easy to get along with (both 63%).

Happiness derives from having a comfortable source of income as well, yes? Do you agree with this?
