My 2014 Chinese New Year Home Cooked Dishes

It's already the 6th day of Chinese New Year today, and most folks are already back at work. There's 15 days of celebration though, so here's a quick sharing of what I had when I was back at Penang for the holidays. Every year I will be back at my hometown in Penang for Chinese New Year 2014, with some really nice home cooked dishes to look forward to.

This year around, the dishes were a bit less than the previous years (My 2012 Chinese New Year Home Cooked Dishes , My 2011 Chinese New Year Home Cooked Dishes) as mum came back together with me from KL and did not have ample time to prepare full blown chinese new year dishes. Nevertheless the ones she prepared, had to be my favourite.

As usual, every Chinese New Year meal in our family would not be complete without the traditional "Ju Hu Char" dish, with springy strands of cuttlefish providing the taste. Taken with mum's home made sambal, I could actually just have this with rice as a meal on its own.

The home made sambal belacan went best when being wrapped in these fresh lettuce, being crunchy, spicy, and refreshing all at one go. The meal would not have been complete without her sambal belacan if you asked me.

Another one of my favourite was the black pepper chicken with mushroom dish. Whipped up from dark soy sauce, lots of pepper and tender chicken meat, this dish was both savoury and sweet. I especially liked the sauce, pouring it unto my rice to give it that oily flavour.

It was an overdose of meat this Chinese New Year holiday at home, with the 'loh bak' and Taiwanese Sausage contributing to the protein count. I really like the loh bak prepared as it had a very crispy outer layer with soft slightly fatty meat inside. Being a fan of Taiwanese Sausages, I alone can 'wallop' a whole plateful of these meaty delights.

A hot bowl of nourishing soup is always welcomed after a heavy meal. Boiled to perfection, mum did not spare any expenses on the ingredients inside ensuring it was filled to the brim with good stuff. After the meal, I felt healthier already, or should I say, my stomach felt so much 'healthier'. Anyway that's that, a short writeup on the some of the wonderful dishes mother whipped up for my 2014 Chinese New Year meal. Wait up for a few upcoming posts on my steamboat reunion dinner with the in-laws and more. Gong Xi Fa Cai again to all!
