OKONOMI by Tokyo Don @ Tokyo Street, Pavilion Kuala Lumpur

Just before MCO happened again in the country, I’ve had the opportunity to try out and savour the offerings from OKONOMI Japanese restaurant over at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur. Located on Level 6 Tokyo Street inside Pavilion Mall, it’s pretty easy to locate it. Read on for my take on the noms that we tried that evening when we were there.

Okonomi = As you like.. indeed.

First thing that came to my mind the moment I arrived at the restaurant was, what does Okonomi stand for? Is it a type of food? My questions were promptly addressed. Okonomi actually means ‘what you like’ or ‘as you like’ in Japanese. Okonomi Pavilion comes off as a rather casual, homely Japanese restaurant.

Now if you have the chance to meet the chef Takeshi Wada, he does come off as being an imposing figure, friendly when he smiles though. In fact, he did garner a niche following from his previous debut at the famed Osaka Kitchen. Now helming the kitchen of Okonomi, he’s here to serve up his signature specialties which is bound to tempt the tastebuds.

The restaurant’s sleek and spartan interior in neutral and earth tones is dominated by a teppan counter  ̶  a cooking method in post-World War II Japan which uses a teppan (iron griddle) to grill, broil or pan-fry hence yaki (焼き). In fact I was told Chef Takeshi Wada is the one and only Japanese Chef in-house in the whole of Pavilion. Interesting.

We had the opportunity to try of some of the specialties from Okonomi’s menu, beginning with a full course of noms ranging from starters to mains and ending it with the customary ice cream (yuzu, black sesame and the likes). Let’s begin shall we?

We kicked off our meal at Okonomi with some Salad and the very unique Black Sesame Tofu. Yes you read that right, sesame tofu. I could literally wobble it on the plate akin to wobbling a piece of jelly. It tasted surprisingly good, way better than how it looked to me.

We then had the Pork Belly Omelet. Served in these cutely wrapped pieces, I could literally pop the whole piece into my mouth at one go. I did not though, and took the time to savour the yummylicious pork belly inside.

Australian Wagyu Sirloin

My all time favourite, I’m totally in love with the Australian Wagyu Sirloin. It looks as good as it tastes. The outer slightly charred bits complemented the soft tender medium rare portion inside. Sliced into bite sized pieces, I’m satisfied.

Ral d’Avinyo Pork

We had the chance to try the Raw d’Avinyo Pork as well while we were there. I did feel the pork was a tad too lean, as I’m so used to fatty pork, but that’s just me. The meat itself is a crossbreed between 2 rustic pigs, a Berkshire male and a Duroc female. The end result was a good piece of sweet and tender meat. Yummy.

Avocado Cheese

Now i’m not exactly the biggest fan of Avocados, but am always in for cheese. When combined, the Avocado Cheese really hits out to my tastebuds. Love the crispiness of the cheese, coupled with the soft avocado. Not bad at all.

Okonomiyaki

Japanese pancakes anyone? One of the nicest Okonomiyaki I’ve had in a while. The perfect Okonomiyaki, whipped up by Chef Takeshi Wada was just bursting with flavours. The Japanese savoury pancake consisted of various yummy ingredients inside, with lots of veggies to even out the sinful sauces. Love it.

Dining at Okonomi by Tokyo Don is a sensorial experience. We were able to see the chefs in action right in front of of us, listening to the exciting buzz of house specialities being prepared, and smelling the appetising aroma of freshly cooked food. Do find time to drop by Okonomi the next time you’re in the vicinity, after MCO is over!
