Located next to the entrance of The Gardens Mall, opposite Starbucks Mid Valley, I learnt that Hoshino Coffee currently has more than 180 outlets in Japan itself. Hoshino Coffee uses specialty-grade Arabica beans which are carefully selected by Coffee Maestro, Masahiro Kanno, and the results are fantastic! They not only serve hand dripped coffee, theres a whole array of dessert and main courses available on their extensive menu.

Entering the 2 storey cafe, the ambiance on the ground floor is pretty casual, with a Japanese cafe feel to it. When we went up to the second floor that’s where the luxury come into the picture. Imagine posh leather sofa to sit, and chandeliers handing from above, pretty cool sight. What’s interesting is the fact they have a whole small area specially dedicated to children to play and read.

Bring forth the coffee!

The coffee served here are hand drip ones, and Hoshino Coffee is pretty proud about it. The coffee is brought by Doutor Coffee, and we were given a demonstration on how the drip is done. Hoshino Blend Coffee (Hand Drip Coffee) is really rich, with a full bodied flavour and original blend. Good stuff! To further enhance the taste, hot coffee is served in a preheated cup, while iced coffee is served in a copper mug to present the beverage in its best form.

If you’re like me, who prefers milk to his cup of coffee, then go for the Japanese Milk Coffee, which comes with a choice of four sweet flavours, from Raspberry Chocolate, Honey Nut, Mint Chocolate, and Strawberry Banana. I personally tried the Honey Nut flavour and with the addition of condensed milk, plus the crunchy feel of the nuts, I’m in LOVE! I highly recommend this.

Hot food, a must in my books!

We kicked off dinner proper with the Hoshino Spaghetti with Eggplant, Chicken Bacon, Shimeji & Chicken Sausage dish. Lots of yummy stuff thrown into the mix. I especially love the egg which wobbles in the middle when this dish is served. Expect a savoury, filling pasta dish, pretty good, and not too rich if compared to the next pasta dish to arrive on our table.

The Salmon Spaghetti with Wasabi Cream Sauce is extremely creamy. I like carbonara, but sometimes its a whole lot to take in, especially if the sauce is too thick. Interesting that this dish has that certain lightness to it, probably due to the hint of wasabi in the sauce itself!

Paella lovers will do good to try out Hoshino Coffee’s Seafood Paella. I found the rice to be really tasty, coupled with seafood, its a meal on its own! It does get very filling though, so I do recommend to share this with your partner or friends.

Now this is another good tasting dish, the Hoshino Pot-Baked Curry Rice with Chicken. Lots of chicken goodness thrown in, the creamy sauce makes for a good combination. Lovely! One of my favourite dish that evening, I literally could finish the whole dish to myself.

Western Japanese fusion dish? If you’re one for a big platter of Western styled main course, then go for the Cheesy Chicken Cutlet Platter which comes with either rice or toast. Your call, I prefer to have it with toast as the chicken cutlet is really huge!

Desserts are a MUST have here at Hoshino Coffee!

I personally haven’t tasted a souffle that’s so airy, yet soft and moist. Hoshino Coffee’s Pot-Baked Souffle comes in 3 flavours: Vanilla with Custard Sauce, Vanilla with Chocolate Sauce and Matcha. Do note the preparation for this dessert may take up to 20 minutes, but it’s totally worth it! My favourite is the Vanilla with Custard Sauce Souffle.

We got to try out a thicker type of souffle as well, the Pancake Souffle (Double) which comes in a thick pancake style offering. On its own, I’m not too accustomed with the lack of sweetness, hence the accompanied Maple / Honey Syrup is a welcome sight.

Don’t forget to order their French Toast as well! One of my favourite dessert at Hoshino Coffee, be sure to take this while its hot and freshly served. You wouldn’t want it to get mushy if you wait for too long!

  1. The seaweed in the salmon spaghetti plate looks like a spider. Saw Clever Munkey blogging about this place a couple of days ago. I like my coffee black and extra strong!
