I was pretty impressed with the three tier tea set, with the Maids of Honour tarts taking centre-stage. There'a a colourful history behind this delectable pastry filled tarts though. Read on for some interesting history lesson.

The Maids of Honours tarts were first discovered in the 16th century by Tudor King Henry VIII, who was introduced to the delicate pastry-filled tarts at Hampton Court Palace by Anne Boleyn, the second of his six wives.

It is said the King declared the tarts so delicious he ordered the recipe – and the Maid of Honour who baked them – to be locked up and only allowed out to bake for the Royal court. The Maids of Honour recipe remained a secret for 200 years until it was leaked by a palace cook to John Billet, a baker in nearby Richmond.

In 1850 Robert Newens, a former Billets apprentice, opened his own bakery in Richmond, using the original Maids of Honour recipe he learned as a trainee baker.

Since then the Newens family have continued baking Maids of Honour tarts to the same recipe through the generations for customers who have included Britain’s War-time Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill, Queen Elicabeth II and more recently X Factor judge Simon Cowell and Hollywood couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.

Accompanying our cup of Starhill Jewel tea served in fine China tea set is the specially created pastry and cakes. Shown above is the first tier which contains the Strawberry Dip Chocolate (the coat), Couture Handbag Cake, Designer Shoe, English Trifle and the Red Velvet Hat. I like how each and every piece is created with lots of attention to detail.

Third tier, assorted open sandwiches which has filling of cheese, chicken, and smoked salmon.

All three tiers of the Journey Through Time IX Afternoon Fashion Hi-Tea at Newens Tea House London, Starhill Gallery were exceptionally filled with yummylicious tea time delights. I personally liked the third tier which consists of an assortment of open sandwiches which has filling of cheese, chicken, and smoked salmon.

In February 2015, Newens appointed classically-trained British singer Carly Paoli as the brand’s first ambassador. A month later Newens celebrated another milestone appointing 2 Michelin-starred chef John Burton Race to create the Newens Collection by John Burton Race – an exclusive line of 18 classic English pastries and pies.

  1. A touch of class. Love the crockery but can't say I like the decor though. Eyewwwww!!!! The ad in the middle of the post: "Meet China Women.
Safely and Reliably Find a Woman of Your Dreams at AsianDate.com" certainly spoils it all!
