Chinese New Year 2015 Spring Reunion @ Prince Hotel & Residence Kuala Lumpur

Just last week I had the opportunity to sample some of the Chinese New Year 2015 Spring Reunion fares from Prince Hotel & Residence KL. This Chinese New Year, it is going to be a feast of delicious dishes at the Tai Zi Heen Chinese Restaurant. Prepared by Chef Michael Wong, the 9 course auspicious set menus and prosperity yee sang, promising a prosperous and peaceful New Year,  will begin from 26th January to 5th March 2015.

The auspicious festive menus begin like always, with the tossing of the Yee Sang, a must have for any CNY meal. A variety of ingredient options are available including the signature Four Seasons Prosperity Yee Sang (butterfish, salmon, tuna and jellyfish), Abalone, Hamachi, Canadian Surf Clam, Salmon or Snow pear.

A very healthy Double Boiled Chicken Broth with Whole Abalone, Dried Scallops, Bamboo Pith and Vegetables kick started our festive menu. The abalone did go very well with the very nourishing double boiled chicken soup. It had a rather heavy flavour especially coming from the dried scallops and bamboo pith. Served hot, this is a good start.

They always say, it's important that you take some of the 'fatt choy', dark strands of moss vegetable as it will give you prosperity and luck for the year to come. The Braised Japanese Sun-dried Shiitake Mushrooms with Dried Oysters and Fatt Choy had ample fatt choy to be shared among all present with the mushrooms and dried oysters giving a very oriental flavour to the dish.

Baked Salmon Fillets with Honey and Onion Rings

A rather westernized fusion chinese dish was served next, one which took me by surprise as I wouldn't have expected a dish like this to pop up in a CNY set menu. Anyway, I'm not complaining, as the Baked Salmon Fillets with Honey and Onion Rings looked and tasted great! The salmon fillets wasn't overly dry, with sweet and savoury honey coating on top, we could not get enough of this delicacy.

Indulge in a very luxurious dish, the Wok-fried Rice with Diced Lobster, Tobiko and Bonito Flakes where I could find generous amounts of diced lobster and tobiko on the top. Good stuff, as there's this 'wok hei' slightly burnt but very fragrant smell to the dish. The taste was exactly how I thought it would be, with the lobster flavour blending well with the fried rice.

Crispy Deep-fried Sesame Balls with Salted Egg Yolk Custard and Durian Mochi

Did someone mention durian? My favourite fruit, we ended our rather simple food tasting with dessert in the form of their Crispy Deep-fried Sesame Balls with Salted Egg Yolk Custard and Durian Mochi. Good stuff, especially the fresh durians being used in the mochi. I find the salted egg yolk custard inside the sesame balls to be pretty cool, oozing out when you bite into it.
