Grandmama's Flavours Of Malaysia @ Pavilion KL

Not a new outlet in town, in fact it has been around since 2009. Grandmama's at Pavilion KL with the tagline being Flavours Of Malaysia is located on the 6th floor of the mall just next to Baskin Robbins. I had the opportunity to dine there a couple of days back for lunch, and I must say it was a rather filling affair, as the portions were rather big.

The name Grandmama’s is used based on a reflection of the food that our grandmothers used to make in the kitchen during our younger days, a nostalgic reminder of our Queen of Cooking.

At Grandmama’s, they serve authentic Malaysian food in depict of our nostalgic memory of her culinary skills and passions. She has whizzed across the world on her trusty Harley Davidson to spread the joys of Malaysian food. Grandmama’s invites us to explore her recipe through their menu in union of the collections.

I was there that afternoon to try out their set meals as well as some of their signature dishes Fried Sang Har Egg Noodles and Nasi Ayam Istimewa to name a few. It was indeed nice to see the dishes prepared in a rather homely style, just what we would have expected our grandmothers' dishes to look and taste like.

Deep Fried Boneless Chicken Basted in Zesty Barbecue Sauce Set

One of the set meals we had that after was the Deep Fried Boneless Chicken Basted in Zesty Barbecue Sauce Set which was part of their new set menu, namely “Mama-licious Meal” due to high demand from the customers. The idea was to have a variety of different Malaysian tastes and flavours on one plate.

Featuring some new creations from the chef and to offer varieties to the customers, the set menu comes with one main course (customer choice) and 3 side dishes, soup and dessert of the day – a satisfying set featuring Malaysian local delights all in one meal.

I must say I really like Grandmama's Deep Fried Boneless Chicken Basted in Zesty Barbecue Sauce. The chicken itself was deep fried to a crisp on the edges and outside, drizzled with a sweet and flavourful barbecue sauce. The meat inside was tender and not overcooked which went really well with the accompanied rice and side dishes.

All of Grandmama's new set meal came with similar side dishes, soup, dessert and rice, with the main dish being the option, where we can choose to either have Seafood Curry Hot Pot, Deep Fried Chicken in Zesty Barbecue Sauce, Wok-fried Beef, Stir fried Sambal Prawns, or Chicken Kurma Curry.

Shown above is the Seafood Curry Hot Pot, which consisted of shrimps, fish, cuttlefish, and seafood with ladies fingers. The curry itself had a very savoury taste, or as what I usually refer to as being very 'lemak' thanks to the santan and various spices put in. It went really well with rice, and can be taken as a meal on its own.

Sang Har Crystal Noodles Soup - RM25

One of Grandmama's hotseller and signature dish would be their Sang Har noodles which came in the dry version as well as the Sang Har Crystal Noodles Soup version which we had that day. It did live up to its hype, coming in one big bowl with large freshwater prawns in it. Served in a light broth with flat rice noodles inside, it is a must try dish in my books.

Nasi Ayam Istimewa - RM22
Nasi Ayam Istimewa - RM22

The Nasi Ayam Istimewa came in a combination of tri-coloured rice, assam prawn, beef rendang and a deep fried chicken drumstick. A Malaysian delicacy, this dish provides some variety to your otherwise usual nasi lemak or the likes. I find the assam prawn to be very nice, as well as the beef rendang which had these addicitive taste and flavour. Good stuff here.

Cendol with corn - RM8

We ended our very filling meal with some dessert in the form of a very over the top Cendol with corn. Why over the top? The corn thrown into the dessert had to be a dish by itself judging from the amount thrown in, not that I'm complaining though as I really love eating these. A perfect way to end our meal, do check out Grandmama's Flavours Of Malaysia @ Pavilion KL the next time you're there shopping and looking for a place to dine in.
