Hokkaido Santouka Ramen @ Tokyo Street Pavilion KL

It was a ramen feast the other day when I was at Hokkaido Santouka Ramen @ Tokyo Street Pavilion KL. Personally, it was my first time dining in the Tokyo Street area at pavilion KL, hence I was rather excited to try out the ramen there. The location is pretty prominent, inside Tokyo Street on the 6th floor, where everything's Japanese there.

Arriving at the eatery, I was pretty impressed with the decor, where it did look the part. I was told beforehand the ramens here were pretty good, hence I had high expectations of the dishes. Shown above was the first ramen dish brought out, the Creamy Shio Ramen. Served under the Original Ramen section of the menu, the Creamy Shio Ramen had a salty soup base to it. The Tonkotsu soup had a mild pearl colour to it, simmered to perfection with pork bones before adding in the vegetables, dried fish, kelp and other special ingredients.

The Shoyu Ramen is also categorized under the Original Ramen series, which was similar to the first Creamy Shio Ramen except for the different soy sauce flavour. It came with medium sized noodle, blending well with the delightful soup. This dish had the bamboo shoot thrown in, for that added flavour, added with the char-siu pork, this is a must have ramen dish at Santouka.

#2 Miso Ramen - RM26

If you like miso soup, then do try out their variation of the Miso Ramen in soy bean paste flavour. If the noodles are not sufficient, you could upgrade from the regular ramen to a large size at an additional cost of RM4. If you're a small eater, then go for their small size, at RM2.50 less.

#3 Kara-Miso Ramen - RM28

I love spicy food, hence when presented with the spicier variation in the form of the Kara-Miso Ramen, I was delighted to try it out. Served in a bowl, looking really spicy, the dish came with spicy soy bean paste flavour which went well with my taste buds. Additional toppings can be added to your bowl of ramen noodles, from a choice of Nori (seaweed), Negi (leek), Naruto (fish cake), Kikurage (black fungus), Menma (bamboo shoot), Corn and Butter Corn, priced from RM1 to RM3.

Besides char-siu, diners can opt for this exquisite premium ‘rarest of the rare’ pork cheeks that taste very tender and succulent, which are only available in limited quantities every day. I like these slices of meat, and it did go well with the ramens.

#4 Aburi Tokusen Toroniku - RM17

The presentation of the Aburi Tokusen Toroniku looked pretty impressive, even though the small artificial candle flames inside were just for show. This dish is a simple but flavorful premium pork cheek served in thin slices. Santouka's chef roasted it with minimal marinade so that the guests can enjoy the lovely natural pork taste.

#5 Gyoza - RM12

One of the popular side dishes, Santouka's Gyoza came in a serving of five. Filled with a choice of either succulent pork meat or chopped vegetables, do try it out when you're here. For me, I would have preferred if the gyoza 'skin' is a tad thinner.

#6 Tori-Karaage - RM12

Ah, my favourite deep fried chicken pieces, the Tori Karaage had this 'belacan' chicken-like flavour to it, deep fried to perfection. It went well with the accompanying salad mayonnaise dip. We liked this dish so much that a second serving was promptly ordered.

We ended our delightful ramen meal at Hokkaido Santouka Ramen @ Tokyo Street Pavilion KL with their dessert in the form of the Green tea matcha ice-cream with red bean. I must say, Santouka do serve one of the nicer ramens I've had in recent times. Now if only the pricing could have been more afffordable, but I do understand all the preparation and hard work put into every soup base and dishes served here. Do check out Hokkaido Santouka Ramen the next time you're in Pavilion KL and looking to have some ramens.

  4. The chef was willing to even change some of the menu choices upon request. We opted for station style and had some unique choices like a taco bar.

  5. If you liked this I would highly recommend trying Bankara Ramen in Avenue K! However also on the pricey side, definitely one of the best ramens i've had in a long time!
