Fresca Mexican Kitchen & Bar Gardens Midvalley

Now I have not tried enough Mexican food to know a lot, as my last Mexican meal was at Frontera jaya One. What I do know is that they have a unique flavour to it, being neither too spicy, with a tinge of sourishness in every dish. Last week, I had the opportunity to dine in at a new Mexican eatery in The Gardens Midvalley aptly named Fresca Mexican Kitchen & Bar.

Reaching the cafe bar styled restaurant, I was impressed with the decor and how it exudes a really comfy ambiance. We were greeted by the owner, and ushered to our seats to begin a nice dinner of Mexican cuisine. The reataurant itself was fairly new, opened a couple of months back but there was already a steady crowd dining there that night.

We kicked off with the appetizers, which in Mexican cuisine came in the form of the Nachos Grande as well as the Tacos Ensenada. Deep fried beer battered fish folded into these soft tacos with some mayonnaise and veggies on top makes for a really good starter. I liked the taste of the batter as it was really savoury.

The Nachos Grande needed some getting used to from my side though, as the nachos were not spiced, but came in either an all vegetarian version or the one with meat inside. What contains inside it are refried beans, Monterey Jack cheese, ground beef, Jalapeno Chiles, guacamole and sour cream.

 Sopa de Tortilla - RM22

We went on to have our soup in the form of the Sopa de Tortilla before digging into our first main dish of the night, the Enchiladas Rojas. The soup was very Mexican-like to me, an acquired taste I suppose. The soup is a traditional Mexican soup consisting of a rich broth flavoured with Guajillo Chile, garnished with fresh avocado, Ancho Chile, crumbly feta and golden tortilla strips.

The Enchiladas Rojas came in this rather huge platter consisting of soft corn tortillas, rolled with chicken or beef in a special marinade, covered with melted cheese and red chili sauce.  Served with guacamole, refried beans and Mexican red rice. What can I say, I liked the rice, but the sauce was a tad too overwhelming for my taste buds.

Chile Rellenos - RM30
#5 Jalapeno Poppers

I do like the deep fried Jalapeno Poppers dish. In fact, I think I take a liking for anything deep fried, especially when it has this really thick cheese inside which stretches really long when you pick at it. It's actually 3 pieces of stuffed Jalapeno Chiles breadcrumbed and fried and served with mango salsa.

Camarones al Ajillo
#6 Camarones al Ajillo - RM24

For someone who doesn't really fancy seafood, I was blown away by Fresca's Camarones al Ajillo, or simply put, garlic infused prawn dish. Tiger prawns sauteed with fragrant Guajillo Chiles and garlic, I could not get enough of this dish. The prawns were fresh, and coupled with the garlic oil, it was indeed a deliciously fragrant dish to go with the accompanying flour tortillas.

Carne Asada a la Tampiquena
$7 Carne Asada a la Tampiquena - RM54

Save the best for last, and I was really excited when my meaty steak dish came along. Uniquely named Carne Asada a la Tampiquena I basically had more interest in the huge chunks of beef steak than the rice. Grilled tenderloin the Mexican way, with onions, Mexican red rice, enchiladas verdes and refried beans, it was good, I still preferred sirloin or rib-eye though, but that's just me.

Overall a good meal over at Fresca Mexican Kitchen & Bar. Concealed at a corner near the main entrance of The Gardens in Midvalley, do drop by should you suddenly feel like having a nice Mexican meal out with friends and family.
