KyoChon Malaysia Korean Fried Chicken @ 1 Utama, Bandar Utama

Much have been said about the latest eatery in town, where I had the opportunity to catch their launch the other day. KyoChon Malaysia, the #1 Korean Fried Chicken chain in Korea opened its doors to the public recently at 1 Utama Shopping Mall. The other day, I was there again with a bunch of really cool Nuffnangers and Nuffies for a nice dinner sampling all their signature dishes. Check out my review below.

KyoChon, Korea’s No.1 fried chicken brand, officially opened its at One Utama Shopping Centre amidst a flurry of journalists, social influencers, and the excitement generated through the appearance of its founders. As winner of numerous consumer awards in its home country, KyoChon’s arrival in Malaysia not only solidifies the popularity of Korean cuisine amongst discerning Malaysians, but specifically, tasty, good quality fried chicken – prepared differently – with a distinctive Korean flavour.

#2 Blueberry / Mandarin Salad - RM15.90
#2 Blueberry / Mandarin Salad - RM15.90

To kick start our meal that night, we were served first with some appetizers in the form of the Seasoned Wedges and the Blueberry / Mandarin Salad. The Seasoned Wedges were rather nice, as it had that crispiness outside on the batter which I can't find elsewhere. From what I was told, the frying technique used helped to maintain its crispiness. As for the Blueberry / Mandarin salad, I did not have much of it as I am not really a fan of salads, unless there are huge chunks of bacon inside. Here, we had a choice of either the blueberry sauce, or the mandarin 'orangey' sauce.

#3 Sal Sal Strips - 5pcs (RM10.90), 10pcs (RM21.80), 20pcs (RM43.50)
#3 Sal Sal Strips - 5pcs (RM10.90), 10pcs (RM21.80), 20pcs (RM43.50)

Even before the signature KyoChon fried chickens were brought out, we were already treated to a sampling of their crispy chicken in the form of these Sal Sal Strips. It was a treat of crunchy tasty strips of wholesome chicken, with a choice of Jambalaya, Honey Mustard, or Red (Spicy) dipping sauces. With a listed rating of only 65kcal per Sal Sal strip, I would think this will make for a healthy alternative to the usual fried chicken.

#4 Dakgalbi Grilled Chicken (comes with Kimchi Fried Rice + Egg) - RM25.90
#4 Dakgalbi Grilled Chicken (comes with Kimchi Fried Rice + Egg) - RM25.90

The Dakgalbi Grilled Chicken set which came next had these really tender and highly seasoned grilled chicken served in a plate with some salad on the side. Included in the set was a bowl of Kimchi Fried Rice with egg. I personally liked this grill chicken, as it tasted a bit like 'teriyaki chicken'. I always love these sweet based sauce used in the grilled chicken dish.

#5 Jimdak Steamed Chicken - RM21.90
#5 Jimdak Steamed Chicken - RM21.90

Do take note the variations in cooking of KyoChon Malaysia's chicken, especially the grilled and steamed chicken is unique only to Malaysia to cater for our varied taste buds. In Korea, where they are the #1 Fried Chicken franchise, KyoChon do not have these dishes. Up next was the Jimdak Steamed Chicken. Again, it was served in a rather sweet based sauce. Too much sweetness isn't actually a good thing, but the chicken was really soft and tender. I like the fact they use the whole thigh part for this dish.

#6 KyoChon Red Series Fried Chicken (Red Wings & Drummets) - 5pcs (RM9.90), 10pcs (RM19.80), 20pcs (RM39.50)
#6 KyoChon Honey Series Fried Chicken (Honey Wings & Drummets) - 5pcs (RM10.90), 10pcs (RM21.80), 20pcs (RM43.50)

Now I've been to Seoul, South Korea a couple of years back, and I must say, I understand why a large portion of 20pcs can be offered here at KyoChon. In Korea, they actually treat these fried chicken as snacks instead of the main course, and it is taken while the guys drink and chill out after work in the evenings. The first of the three signature series, KyoChon Honey Series Fried Chicken came in a beautiful honey glaze. The crispiest of the lot, this series had more batter added in, hence the crispiness. It was a very nice sweet savory affair, one which I really liked, and would definately recommend.

#7 KyoChon Original Soy Series Fried Chicken (Original Soy Wings & Drummets) - 5pcs (RM9.90), 10pcs (RM19.80), 20pcs (RM39.50)
#7 KyoChon Original Soy Series Fried Chicken (Original Soy Wings & Drummets) - 5pcs (RM9.90), 10pcs (RM19.80), 20pcs (RM39.50)

Now if you're a fan of original, or slightly flavoured fried chicken, then go for the KyoChon Original Soy Series Fried Chicken. They come in wings and drummets, or you could actually mix and match when ordering. Personally, I felt this series didn't shine as much as the other two. Nevertheless it was a good one, being crispy on the outside, with premium chicken wings and drummets being used, the meat had that certain sweetness to it.

#8 KyoChon Red Series Fried Chicken (Red Wings & Drummets) - 5pcs (RM9.90), 10pcs (RM19.80), 20pcs (RM39.50)
#8 KyoChon Red Series Fried Chicken (Red Wings & Drummets) - 5pcs (RM9.90), 10pcs (RM19.80), 20pcs (RM39.50)

A crowd favourite, the KyoChon Red Series Fried Chicken (Red Wings & Drummets) came in a fiery red presentation. Does it live up to its fiery colour? Yes it does, as the spiciness of the chicken is over the top, one which prompted me to finish up my ice cold drink even before I finished the meal. If you love spicy fried chicken, then go for this flavour. Again, I love the fact that KyoChon uses the double-fry technique, ensuring the chicken is virtually oil-free, a healthy option in my books.

Overall, it was a nice meal out at KyoChon Malaysia 1 Utama. The fried chicken really tasted exquisite and was unlike the other fried chicken out there. Healthier, crispier, with some really funky flavours, do check out KyoChon Malaysia @ 1 Utama should you be in the vicinity. Now if only I could convince myself the price is okay.
