Digital Wellness - What’s It All About?
In recent times, we have all had that moment where we start caring more about our health, taking up jogging again, going to the gym and what nots. That’s all good and awesome, but with the greatness of technology in recent times, we tend to neglect our so-called digital well-being. This is my first time stumbling upon the term Digital Wellness, but it has got me thinking really hard!
Are you digitally well?
Is it Merely a Buzzword?
Digital Wellness, now what is this all about? Anyone can call a need for tech, being 24/7 connected an awesome feeling, but does digital wellness comes off as a real need to address a growing problem in our tech based society? Who doesn’t own a smartphone nowadays? Our iPhones, Samsungs, Huaweis, and such, they are connected all the time to the internet, and with it comes a host of “new world” problems. Let’s have a walkthrough what may affect our digital wellness shall we?
Concept of Digital Wellness
Did you know Digital Wellness is a global movement designed to strike a balance between technology and personal well-being. It actually seeks to establish a holistic and unified approach to responsible internet consumption. What’s going on with our world? Read on.
We are all too engrossed with technology, and how it's taking over our lives!
Our Appetite for Connectivity is HUGE!
More than half of the world is connected to the internet and smartphone usage is on a constant rise. We think it’s good, to be linked up, empowering our lives to do better and be better people. Information are on our fingertips, but is it a case of “too much of a good thing may be hazardous to our well being”?
Our Online Persona is Better Than The Real World!
No longer do we want to answer phone calls, for fear of actually “talking” to the person and preferring to type out our messages on Whatsapp instead. We are so updated with forwarded news, that sometimes we don’t even know if it’s the truth or not. Our Facebook is full of our beautiful trumped up picture, tapping into our innate desires to socialise. Online platforms are booming, and they are taking over our lives! Sometimes I feel I’m losing touch with reality.
When you lose touch, that's when a detox session needs to come in, yes?
Online platforms – be they social networks, e-commerce sites or games – today are using persuasive and motivational techniques to bait its users. According to the World Health Organisation, these include:
- Scarcity: a snap or status is only temporarily available; encouraging one to get online quickly
- Social proof: thousands of users retweeted or shared an article, so you should go online and read it
- Personalisation: news feeds are designed to filter and display content based on one’s interest. This often leads to the creation of ‘echo chambers’; and
- Reciprocity: inviting more friends to a network to get extra points. It becomes harder for a person or their friends to leave once integrated into the network.

Faster Wi-Fi at Home
Blazing speeds, I’ve recently upgraded to Unifi, where everything is just so fast! With fast internet, comes great responsibilities too. Moderation is key, without responsibility not only makes us susceptible to be fired up by unverified news, it can also make us compulsive in our pursuit of updates.
The tech giants are already moving in to help us curb this over-excessive time spent on our devices. Apple recently announced controls that allow iOS users to monitor the time they spent on devices; as well as setting time limits on app use, controlling the level of distractions from notifications, and regulate children’s’ device usage. On the other side of the wall, Google is adding features to the Android OS the help users keep their smartphone usage in check.

Let’s Detox Digitally Shall We?
Don’t let technology take control of our lives, instead let’s take control over our devices! We’re being tethering to our devices and social media networks to the point that withdrawal may even cause anxiety, panic and even depression. You would think we need a break from all of this. Part of the popularity of digital wellness today is the trend of undergoing ‘digital detoxification’.
