SPARK Foundation x W.A.T.E.R Project - Towards Urban Water Resources Conservation

An interesting question posed to me while I was at the recent SPARK Foundation x W.A.T.E.R Project event. Where do you think our drinking water comes from? Many of us would answer it comes from the tap, but did you know all water comes from rivers? Hence, it’s just so important to ensure our water resources are protected, and thanks to SPARK Foundation, they aim to lead in water stewardship through collaboration with government agencies and local communities in strategic projects.

The Aim? To Protect Water Resources and Work Towards Long Term Sustainable Water Management

Water conservation is critical, which we have to be responsible and do our part for the environment as well. I was at the Pusat Informasi and Pengairan dan Saliran last weekend, where the Water Stewardship Agenda 2018 by SPARK Foundation kickstarted their 3rd Phase. It is in collaboration with W.A.T.E.R Project (Working Actively Through Education and Rehabilitation), Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) and Global Environment Centre.

What is the W.A.T.E.R Project?

The W.A.T.E.R Project is a collaboration between SPARK Foundation and the Global Environment Centre, a non-profit organisation and government agencies which aims to raise awareness on the importance of river and water conservation through community-based programmes.

They actually built a rainwater harvesting system at Block 1, Desa Mentari in Petaling Jaya, which is located within one of its project sites, Sungai Penchala. The awesome system is capable of harvesting an estimate of one million litres of rainwater annually, benefitting 1800 residents in the area by supplying additional water supply suitable for general use such as cleaning, landscaping and irrigation.

SPARK Foundation has committed to invest RM2.5 million over the next three years for Phase 3 to fund continuous education programmes and strategic initiatives along the targeted river basins of Sungei Way, Sungai Penchala and Sungai Selangor.

This is a really good initiative and collaboration, one which will eventually introduce alternative water supply and strengthen awareness on water conservation to the general public. Check out their (SPARK Foundation)’s official website at www.sparkfoundation.com.my to learn more. In fact, you can sign up as volunteers or even become a partner.
