Hari Raya Open House - Do’s and Don’ts When You Visit

Hari Raya Open House - Do’s and Don’ts When You Head To One

It’s that time of year again, where we get invited, and attend numerous Hari Raya open houses, be it from friends, colleagues, politicians, and many other parties who hold these. A Hari Raya Open House brings together people regardless of their religion, race and social background. Did you know there’s an unwritten “law” of ethics when we go home visiting? Yes there is, and today, we’re going to run through a couple of Do’s and Don’ts when we head to a Raya Open House.

DO: Remove Your Shoes Before Entering

Come on, I’m sure you don’t wear your shoes into your own home, yes? Do unto others what you would want others to do unto you, not sure where I heard of that phrase, but you get the point yes? As a sign of respect to the host and his/her home, remember to always remove your shoes before entering the house. Be respectful guys!

DO: Greet and Smile When Entering

This isn’t a shopping mall, and neither is it a restaurant where you just barge in to your seats and demand for food. Proper etiquette requires us to give a nice and pleasant outlook, greeting others when entering the Hari Raya Open House of our choice.

DON’T: Be Too Aggressive When Grabbing Food

We are nice Malaysians, and with that being said, there are going to be lots of food at Hari Raya Open Houses, as we Malaysians love to eat. But refrain from grabbing EVERYTHING in sight, piling it onto your plate like there’s no tomorrow. Be moderate guys, there should be more than enough food to go around.

DON’T: Dress Too Sexy

Yes, you know it’s a Hari Raya Open House, and yet you want to come in those spaghetti string dresses. Why? Be respectful of the culture, dress properly. Don’t come with those ripped t shirts, or an overly sexy outfit. The host will not kick you out, but for sure, you’ll stick out like a sore thumb.

Check out the video below on 5 things to do during Raya. It's pretty cool!

Comments

  1. I would want to add one - do dress up nicely. I met some young people visiting their friends - they looked like they just came from jogging in the park. I do think the effort to make oneself look presentable is a show of respect for the hosts - can't understand how they did not feel it was inappropriate to go visiting so casually dressed.

  2. Are you going to bring me? Promise I'll behave!
