Lai Ching Yuen Chinese Restaurant at Grand Millennium Kuala Lumpur never fails to impress me with their delectable Chinese cuisine. It was with great delight then, that I was back there a couple of weeks back to try their latest offerings, the All-You-Can-Eat Ala carte Dim Sum promotion. With more than 50 selections to choose from, we were spoilt for choice. Check out what we had that day.

For so many scrumptious delights, suddenly the RM78 nett per pax pricing because palatable. I've always loved to have dim sum with family and friends, but the pricing has always been a hindrance. Here at Grand Millennium Kuala Lumpur, you get premium delicious dim sum, with great ambiance.

It's an ala-carte buffet prepared by Lai Ching Yuen's Dim Sum Chef, Chef Thye Yoon Kong. By that, it means we could choose our fares off their specially curated dim sum menu, and have it prepared steaming hot from the kitchen straight to our table. We went ahead to choose some appetizers first to whet our appetite, beginning with the Black Fungus & Cucumber in Special Dressing, and the Deep Fried Enoki Mushroom.

Now I did not know you can deep fry mushrooms until they are so light and crispy without burning them. This Deep Fried Enoki Mushroom was done just right, with a sprinkling of seasoning on top. Crispy, crunchy, we munched on this happily while waiting for our subsequent dim sum dishes to arive.

A signature and traditional steamed dim sum offering would be the Siew Mai, one of my favourite and must-order dish. The Steamed Siew Mai with Fish Roe came with generous amounts of fish roe atop one of the juiciest siew mai's I've had in a while. Recommended.

Such a beautiful dim sum offering, the Seafood Dumpling with Spinach came wrapped in translucent wrapping. Served with coriander leaves, and chili sauce on a beautiful plating, love the juicy prawns wrapped with spinach inside. Served piping hot, I do recommend to have these while they are still hot, and not be like us, snapping photographs till they are already cold.

Lovers of fish balls will do good to try out the Steamed Home Made Fish Ball, bouncy tasty balls. You could actually taste the fish inside, unlike some I've had outside which tasted of flour instead. I did like the Steamed Prawn Dumpling, classic dim sum dish for all to savour. The 'Har gow' served had a full fresh prawn inside each piece, with the skin outside being really thin so you get to enjoy as much of the prawn as possible. Good stuff.

I don't usually pick this dish, but the Steamed Spare Ribs with Yam & Garlic served looked really nice, too good to be missed. It comes in a generous serving too, good to be shared with family and friends, rather than having all to oneself and miss out on enjoying the other yummy dim sums.

Fu Chok, I like it deep fried, but the steamed version isn't too bad too. The savoury oyster sauce in the Steamed Beancurd Roll with Oyster Sauce dish did wonders to its flavours. We tried another dish, the Steamed Spinach Dumpling with Preserved Vegetables which while being a favourite of some, did not really go well with my taste buds. Just not my type.

When you hear the word "Szechuan" in any dish, you would do well to prepare for the spiciness that comes with the dish. The Steamed Szechuan Wanton did not disappoint, with a higher than usual spiciness level, it's both sweet and sour at the same time.

On to the buns shall we. We tried out both the very "Chinese" flavoured Steamed Bun with Chinese Sausage as well as the more widely acceptable and preferred Steamed Barbecue Pork Bun. I rarely tried buns with Chinese sausages, and it actually tasted really good. The buns were steamed to a fluff, which I really liked as nobody likes a cold hard bun.

Watch the egg yolk literally ooze out when you bite into the Steamed Custard Bun with Egg Yolk. The salted egg yolk had a savoury flavour to it, without being overbearing and salty. I like this, another signature must try dish.

The Traditional Steamed Cake that arrived next had to be one of the softest, melt in the mouth type of cake I've tasted in a while. Made from palm sugar with roasted almond slices decorating the top, it wasn't too sweet, and went well with the tea served.

I have a friend who will order the Steamed Glutinous Rice with Lard Meat without fail each time we dine at some dim sum spot. The reason being is he mentioned that it's value for money, and really fills the tummy up. I like it too, but always felt it is overly oily. We then tried the Steamed Rice Rolls with Shrimp as well as the Steamed Rice Rolls with Preserved Vegetables.

So fragrant, so tasty. These came to mind when I dig into the delectable Wok Fried Turnip Cake. It definately has that wok-hei flavour, the turnip cakes were diced up and stir fried with lots of eggs, chives, bean sprouts and Chinese sausages. I wouldn't mind having another serving of this.

Now this is a rather special dish, the Pan-fried Nian Gao. Usually had over some Chinese New Year dinner for dessert, I was pleasantly surprised to find it on their menu. Love how the fragrant egg complements the sweet 'nian gao' fried to a crisp on the outside, yet hot and gooey on the inside.

Bring out the deep fried good stuff I say. As initially mentioned at the beginning of this post, and shown on the first picture, I do like my deep fried dim sums. We were served with the Deep Fried Sesame Balls with Lotus Paste, Deep Fried Yam Puff, and the very special Pan fried Bun with Vegetable and Pork. These aren't exactly the healthiest dishes, but hey, they're delicious!

Besides that, Lai Ching Yuen also introduces “Qing Gong Yan” dinner package that welcomes guests to experience authentic Cantonese cuisine at its finest. The dinner package consists of an 8 course dinner which allows guests to choose their choice of dishes off 3 different specially created menu.
