Did you know Mandara Spa is celebrating their 20th Anniversary this May? Yes, you heard that right, they've been around since 1996. The first Mandara Spa opened in May 1996 at The Chedi (now Alila Ubud) in Ubud, Bali. In 1998, Mandara Spa formed a US based division, headquartered in Hawaii, to develop spas in Micronesia, Hawaii and the Pacific. I was at Mandara Spa at Renaissance Kuala Lumpur Hotel yesterday to check out their anniversary celebration event.

The name Mandara comes from an ancient Sanskrit legend about the gods’ quest to claim Tirta Sanjiwani – a powerful holy water that held the secret of immortality and eternal youth. The legend pitches good against evil as it tells of the ten stages of destruction and the eventual return to harmony. In this legend, Mandara Giri is a sacred mountain from which Tirta Sanjiwani flows.

The exotic aromas of spices and pure essential oils, and the gentle sounds of soothing music, will bathe your senses and lull you into a state of relaxed bliss. The ideal place for relaxation, inspiration and sublime indulgence. Anyway, I was there at their 20th Anniversary Party, where the very sweet Sri, Spa Manager of Mandara Spa brought us along on a journey of learning.
|Sri, Spa Manager of Mandara Spa bringing us on a guided tour|
Before bringing us on a guided tour of Mandara Spa, Sri introduced to us some very unique concoctions using fresh ingredients. With one aim, to relax and rejuvenate, we had a short crash course on how to make Kunyit Asem Juice. After showing us, we each got to try it out ourselves. Pretty interesting.

On top of the Kunyit Asem Juice, we each got a chance to see how a Traditional Body Scrub is prepared (ie: the ingredients used), how a Balinese Boreh Scrub is made as well as a demo performing massage with original coconut oil with grilled onion. I wouldn't have known all this if it wasn't for Sri's explanation.

Mandara Spa offers far more than spa treatments. Regardless of whether the guest books a massage or a 2-hour package, the aim is to provide a rejuvenating journey of sensory awakening. Small touches, like offerings to the guest’s well-being, are thoughtfully added along the way.

Consistently excellent service, well executed and well designed treatments, high standards of professionalism, respect for the guest and attention to detail are the distinguishing characteristics of a Mandara Spa. The Mandara Spa experience combines the beauty and allure of Asian traditions with the sophistication of modern spa techniques.
The distinctive Mandara Spa experience reflects the company’s origins in the exotic island of Bali, Indonesia. Unlike traditional European spas that are often clinical and technical, Mandara Spa celebrates Asian traditions of hospitality and natural beauty. Guests can savour their spa experiences in spacious open-air spa villas, where they can enjoy some of Asia’s centuries old traditional health and beauty treatments in the natural beauty of Asian tropical gardens. Mandara Spa blends traditional treatments from India, Thailand and Indonesia with some of the newest health and beauty trends.

For the traditional Asian inspired treatments, Mandara Spa has developed a range of signature products made from high quality, natural ingredients. Most of these body scrubs, face masks, face scrubs and skin conditioners are made fresh each day, using local produce. The signature aromatherapy massage oil blends use 100% pure essential oils in a natural vegetable oil base. Some locations also offer another level of choice with high performance products from the Elemis range. I personally can't wait for my next massage session at Mandara Spa, one which I would be coming back for soon enough!
