Jolly Kaiseki Set @ Hana Dining & Sake Bar, Sunway Pyramid
It was a night of Japanese cuisine indulgence a couple of days back when I stepped into Hana Dining and Sake Bar at Sunway Pyramid. This time around, it was to taste and try out their latest Christmas Jolly Kaiseki (6 course meal) set. Specially created omakase style by the talented chef, this is going to be a unique christmas menu. Do check out what we had that evening.

Dining Section of Hana |
Even though the name reads sake bar, Hana Dining Sake Bar serves great food too. The outlet is separated into two sections, one the bar section for drinking sessions, and the other for everyday dining with friends and family. It's front facade is a bit tough to notice, but just walk towards Kim Lian Kee, or near the vicinity and you should see the entrance in.
Signature sakes from Hana |
A wide variety of liquor is available too |
Hana sake bar offers more than 100 types of sake and sochu cocktails, along with other alcoholic drinks such as beer and liquor. Interestingly, and very exclusive if you ask me, Hana has its own special sake, named the Junmai Daiginjyo Sake.
Squid stuffed with preserved cucumber (Ikakyuri) and Crispy Cod Fish layered with sweet potato |
The menu specially created by Hana's chef is aptly named the Jolly Kaiseki, going for RM130++ exclusive of GST. It's a six course meal, the first dish being an appetizer dish consisting of Squid stuffed with preserved cucumber (Ikakyuri) and really yummy Crispy Cod Fish layered with sweet potato. I found these really matching, giving that savoury sweet flavours befitting of an appetizer dish.
Wanmono (Steamed Milt of Cod in 'Sake' and bonito flake broth) |
Up next is a very exotic seasonal dish, the Wanmono, soupy style, which is literally cod sperm in a bowl. The Steamed Milt of Cod in 'Sake' and bonito flake broth is an acquired taste, my first foray into exotic seasonal Japanese cuisine. We had these white cod fish sperm, which bursts out the moment you pop it into your mouth. It tastes surprisingly okay, milky and creamy, although I did take my own sweet time to muster up the strength to take and swallow it.
Sashimi - Fresh oyster with Salmon belly (Nama Kaki to shake Harasu sashimi) |
No Japanese cuisine set is complete without sashimi, and here at Hana, they served the delectable Fresh oyster with Salmon belly (Nama Kaki to shake Harasu sashimi). I'm not a big fan of the oyster, but did take a bite or two of the salmon belly. Good mix, or so I was told. Served on a bed of ice, you can be sure the chilled items are fresh, just the way you would expect your sashimis to be served.
Yakimono - Baked papaya with seafood and mushroom (Papaya Motoyaki) |
A very creative and unique creation we had the Yakimono - Baked papaya with seafood and mushroom (Papaya Motoyaki) next. A huge Papaya slice is used for this dish, complete with cheese and shrimps, and mushroom pieces. I found the taste to be refreshing, as it was a mix of sweet papaya fruit with savoury cheese and seafood. The mushrooms added an extra dimension to the dish.
Menrui - Seaweed boletus pasta and Grilled King Prawn with crab paste (Kaiso Boletus Pasta and Kuruma ebi to kani misoyaki) |
A rather luxurious dish, the Menrui - Seaweed boletus pasta and Grilled King Prawn with crab paste dish came served beautifully plated. Love the grilled king prawn as the crab paste stuffing did wonders to its flavours. I'm impartial to the seaweed pasta though, as the taste can be a tad overbearing. But of course, if you love seaweed, this will suit your tastebuds perfectly.
Tofu cheese cake with home made white sesame ice cream (Tofu chizukeki/ goma aisukurimu) |
A perfect end to the delectable Jolly Kaiseki set at Hana would be dessert in the form of their Tofu cheese cake with home made white sesame ice cream. Sweet, creamy indulgence, I never thought tofu can taste so nice. The white sesame ice cream had a lighter flavour than the usual black sesame ice cream that I'm used to. Still good though, as it has that unmistakably sweet taste of a good home made ice cream.
