It was a fun trip up north the other day with a bunch of foodies and friends as we all packed into a Hyundai Starex and drove all the way to Nam Heong Food Court in Ipoh SoHo. Now Nam Heong has been a rather well known name, but I was totally awed by their new outlet. Housed in the same building and management as iMiirage, we were all set to nom into their fares the moment we reached Ipoh.

The building |
A reliable establishment with a rich legacy and a solid communal presence, Nam Heong was renowned as a local icon especially amongst fundamental and traditional coffee shops. With the changing of the winds of its hometown, Ipoh towards a technological and mobile era, Nam Heong has also evolved itself to cater a wider, faster paced and tech savvy people.

Running on the MeCan Order app, which is simple and intuitive to use |
I found the modern design of Nam Heong Food Court to be very pleasing, coupled with the very convenient and high tech method of ordering the food. Patrons just have to sit at their tables, tap on the screen of the iPads, and within minutes the orders will arrive piping hot to the table. So convenient! Gone are the days we have to repeat our orders again and again to the waiter, and the noisy environment when the staffs shout the orders to their kitchen.
Egg Tart (6pcs) - RM12.60 |
Upon reaching the restaurant, we immediately went for their signature Nam Heong Egg Tarts which seemed to be what everyone else is ordering at other tables. Freshly made hot and moist egg tarts really hit a spot, being neither too sweet nor too mushy. The pastry skin itself to me could have been thinner, but that does not hinder us from enjoying a very good egg tart.
Bird's Nest - RM22.10 |
Ordering Bird's Nest at a food court? Why not, as it is on Nam Heong Food Court's menu under 'healthy drinks' tab. Served either hot or cold, it is indeed a luxurious drink to have on a hot day. We ordered a couple of these, but they were really quick to run out of the bird's nest from the kitchen.
Wanton Noodles |
Home Recipe Chee Cheong Fun - RM4.20 |
Before going into the side dishes, we ordered a couple of local cuisines, namely the Wanton Noodle and Home Recipe Chee Cheong Fun, which tasted good, without being too oily. The orders didn't take too long to arrive after we keyed it into the iPad system, which was a good thing.
Char Siew and Roast Pork - RM11.20 |
Roast Pork (1plate) - RM11.20 |
Now I'm a very big fan of good Char Siew and Roast Pork, and the ones served here at Nam Heong Food Court is really huge in serving, definately worth the money you pay for. The roast pork itself was delectable, without being too fatty, with crunchy skin on top. I literally almost finished one whole plate myself.
Curry Mee - RM7 |
They had both the dry and soup version of the famous curry mee. We chose the soup version and it was indeed rather good, with lots of milky 'santan' flavour bringing out that fragrant taste I've always wanted from a good bowl of Curry Mee.
Steam Prawn Puff - RM5.10 |
Crab Meat Popiah - RM3.40 (1pc), RM6.50 (2pcs) |
For dim sum lovers, fret not, as Nam Heong Food Court serves a rather extensive array of dim sums to satisfy your cravings. From the Siew Mai, Fish Ball, Prawn Roll, Char Siew Bao to the Steam Prawn puff and many more off the menu, you will definately find that perfect dim sum to kick off your taste buds. The Crab Meat Popiah which we ordered came looking pretty, but left us wanting for a more normal tasting one. Probably due to the different ingredients thrown into the wrap, it did not hit off with some of us.
Supreme Wok Fried Rice - RM17.80 |
Ah, they serve some really nice fried rice there. We ordered the Supreme Wok Fried rice, which came piping hot, complete with wok hei smell and taste. I do love the smoked duck which complemented the fried rice perfectly. Good stuff, and it does well to fill the stomach up as well.
Grilled Pork Yakitori - RM11.10 |
Grilled Chicken Yakitori - RM11.10 |
Another one of my favourite here at Nam Heong Food Court would be their grilled chicken and pork yakitori. Say what? Yakitori in a chinese food court? Surprisingly, their yakitoris came out tasting really good, albeit there wasn't any sauce to go along with. I much preferred the more fragrant and flavourful Pork Yakitori versus the chicken version.

Come one, come all, grab your bite here at Nam Heong! |
Overall it was a good excursion to Ipoh to try out the fares at Nam Heong Food Court. All Ipoh delicacies under one roof, a concept which I find to be really good. Add in the wonderful ambiance, I would think this is a very good spot to bring your family, clients, or business partners for breakfast, lunch and dinner! Do check them out the next time you're in Ipoh!
That guy looking at you - did not look very happy! LOL!!!
