Chinese New Year Dinner @ Zuan Yuan Chinese Restaurant, One World Hotel Petaling Jaya

It was a feast for the few of us who made it for One World Hotel Petaling Jaya's introduction to their Chinese New Year 2015 menu. We were invited to embrace the rays of prosperity at Zuan Yuan Chinese Restaurant with Chef Heng’s three celebratory set menus. It was also my first time over at One World Hotel to savour their fares after a while with my last writeup way back in 2012 (Cinnamon Coffee House One World Hotel).

Preparing our Crispy Soft Shell Crabs Yee Sang
Preparing our Crispy Soft Shell Crabs Yee Sang

The feast begins as usual with the tantalising Yee Sang where we had my favourite Crispy Soft Shell Crabs, continued with dishes that feature auspicious connotations to ensure a promising year ahead such as prawns for laughter, fish for abundance, oyster for good news and sea moss for prosperity. I've always liked a different twist from the usual salmon, and these soft shell crabs gave the traditional yee sang dish a very appetizing kick.

After a round of happy and prosperous yee sang tossing, we were served with some very nice seafood dishes, int he form of the Steamed Dragon Garoupa with Bean Curds and Black Fungus in King Soy Sauce and Wok Fried Jumbo Tiger Prawns with Superior Soy Sauce. A huge garoupa fish, to cater for 10 diners, it was a nice treat with very soft flesh and ample fish for all. The tiger prawns came out pretty good, and its freshness shows, with the shell literally falling off revealing the sweet prawn inside, made better by the soy sauce used.

The first thing I noticed about the subsequent vegetable dish that arrived at our table was the abalones below the 'fatt choy' moss. It looked so pretty blending well with the rest of the Braised Abalone, Dried Oyster, Sea Moss and Mushroom in Superior Oyster Sauce dish. I wasn't much of a fan of oysters, but the brocolli and mushrooms complemented well with the abalones and oyster sauce.

Roasted "Pi Pa" Duck Traditional Style

A huge serving of roasted "Pi Pa" duck came next. The portions given by Zuan Yuan Restaurant were really generous, ensuring all present get to enjoy the duck meat. I liked the sweet sauce that came with the duck. I've always felt duck meat as compared to chicken is tougher and harder to chew. Surprisingly, here it felt that the meat is a tad more chewable than what I've had elsewhere. Another notable part of this dish would be the crispy duck skin, which I could not get enough of.

The Steamed Rice with Preserved Meat and Diced Duck wrapped in Lotus Leaves was unlike any other I've had recently, as it came moist and oily, not dry at all. A fitting final dish to stuff ourselves with before we ended our meal with some sweet dessert.

We ended the meal with traditional Chinese New Year sweet desserts in the form of their Double Boiled Sea Coconut, Snow Lotus Pear, Red Dates and Snow Lotus Seeds and my favourite Deep Fried `Nian Gao’ with Yam.
