Sony Xperia Z1 Review Part 2: First Looks, Design & Handling

While the first part of my Sony Xperia Z1 Review (Sony Xperia Z1 Review Part 1: Unboxing) focus solely on the unboxing and contents of the package, this Part 2 of my review will showcase the smartphone itself, and what are my first impression of it. Read on below.

Holding the Sony Xperia Z1 in my hands, I could really feel the solidness of the casing, coupled with the 170g weight, it does feel and look like the high-end phone it's being marketed as. Both the front and back panels were made from scratch resistant glass panels, which I'm sure contributed to the weight of the phone. This time around, the battery in Sony Xperia Z1 is a non-replaceable one, being a high capacity 3000mAH one.

I've always liked the simplistic design of Sony's Xperia line of phones. With it's flagship Sony Xperia Z1, Sony maintained the simple non cluttered design, with only its branding and some very light gray markings on the front and back of the smartphone.

Handling the phone was a breeze despite it's size, as it's rather thin at 8.5mm. Inserting the microSD and micro Sim card was easy too, as the Sony Xperia Z1 made its ports easily accessible. Using only my fingers, I do not need any extra tools to open and insert my micro sim card. The on/off button is located at the side, and if you noticed from the photo above, Sony has added a physical hardware shutter button, meaning to snap a photo, we could easily just use it like a normal point and shoot, focusing and pressing the snap hardware shutter key.

Coming from a generation of compact pocketable smartphone (read: Apple iPhones), I was so used to a small sized phone that holding the Sony Xperia Z1 proved to be a tad too big for my hands. Nevertheless, the slim look and premium feel of the phone made up for its slightly larger than usual design. It is still way smaller than some of the tablet-like smartphones in the market.

That concludes Part 2 of my review of the latest Sony Xperia Z1, where the first looks, design and handling is an advantage. Watch out for Part 3 coming soon talking about the hardware, and features of the smartphone.

Nice...but honestly, I can hardly tell one from the other. Such a dinosaur, and of course, needless to say, don't have one. :(

  2. This phone looks very slim and handy size unlike some brands that were too big like books. I used to like SONY brands until their earlier vintage models used to get jammed & "hang" easily. Perhaps I should buy this for my birthday.
