Kiss Goodbye To Breast Cancer Charity Walk By Avon @ Putrajaya

Waking up at 5am today, it was a good feeling as I prepare myself to walk for charity over at Putrajaya for the Kiss Goodbye To Breast Cancer Charity Walk by Avon. Scrambling all over my room for a pink t-shirt, which I could not find any, I went to the event in a white t-shirt instead. Lucky me, as everyone was given a pink t-shirt to blend into the crowd.

The charity run was in conjunction with the global celebrations of Avon's 20th Breast Cancer Crusade anniversary. Avon Malaysia proudly joins more than 58 countries in hosting its second Avon Walk Around The World for Breast Cancer event. Held at Malaysia's famous federal administrative centre and tourist attraction, Putrajaya, roads became a sea of pink as thousands flooded Precinct 2 and 3.

It was going to be a 5k journey walk around the vicinity with the Start and Finish location being in front of this huge stage. Almost everyone there were in a really cheerful mood as the spirit to run for charity really rubbed off each other. The pinkness of everything did help in a way.

Along the route, we were entertained by various groups of people including the Aswara Percussion Essemble, a 'stress free zone' where walkers participated in stress free activities, "1 Malaysia" cheer stations, BSE (breast self examination human statues, and creative cheer stations by Avon staffs.

Apart from joining in the activities, many took the chance to snap photos with local celebrities as well. These celebrities include Avon ambassadors Scha Alyahya, Noor Neelofa, and Soo Wincci; together with other supportive celebs, namely Linda Jasmine, Que Haidar, DJ Jeff, Leslie Chai, Alan Yun, Dato' Fazley, and many more.

Along the route, it was really entertaining to see all the various groups of people. 5km at first seems kind of daunting to me, who have not exercise for ages, but upon starting the walk it was just like a stroll in the park. We joked and danced to the tune of the latest Oppa Gangnam style tunes, and basically everyone was walking happily for a cause, to create awareness of breast cancer.

I was told the first 200 walkers who completed the walk then formed a human pink ribbon as a symbolic gesture to celebrate the upcoming Pink Oktober month. I did not manage to get a glimpse of that though, probably because I was one of the late finishers.

After the walk ended, we were treated to a whole lot of water, 100 plus, milo and even cereal with milk. There were subsequent performances after the run. The main buzz after the walk came from a session of flash mob dance organized by Avon headquarters staff as well as a "Go Bald" session, courtesy of professional hairdressers Michael & Guys Hair Salon and Academy. Our fellow blogger Daniel Chiam from room8five.com took up the challenge and shaved it all off.

Madam Siow Fei Fong, a breast cancer survivor and mother of 3 young kids, took to the stage in sharing her experiences, followed by the presentation of donation cheques amounting to RM50000 from Avon to Breast Cancer Welfare Association )BCWA) and Pink Ribbon Wellness Foundation.

The walk is currently being considered for endorsement by the Malaysia Book of Records for the Largest Participation Breast Cancer Charity Walk in Malaysia. Now that's a pretty cool record if you ask me. Since the launch of Avon Breast Cancer Crusade in 1992, Avon's breast cancer programs in 58 countries have donated more than USD740 million for research and advancing access to care, regardless of a person's ability to pay.

Overall it was a great walk, one which I would happily join again if given the opportunity. Thanks for Jess for the invite this round. I went home after the walk with tired legs, and a whole wealth of information on breast cancer, and how early detection is so important so it can be treated right away. Avon's Kiss Goodbye To Breast Cancer Charity Walk was a huge success.
