15th NESTLE OMEGA PLUS Walk-A-Mile 2016 - #SaveAHeart Today

15th NESTLE OMEGA PLUS Walk-A-Mile 2016

Health is of paramount importance, and everyone should know it. No amount of money can buy back a good clean slate of health once something goes wrong. Did you know that every 15 minutes, there is one death caused by heart disease in Malaysia? That's a scary fact, but how many of us are doing something about it? Many of us tend to wait until later to address our heart health under the perception that heart disease only affects the elderly.

Collaboration Between Nestle Omega Plus & Yayasan Jantung Negara

Not just the elderly have to be concerned over their heart, as research has proven that Malaysians in their thirties have ageing arteries similar to people in their seventies due to their lifestyles. Malaysians need to take care of their heart health now instead of later. This is where Yayasan Jantung malaysia (YJM) and Nestle Omega Plus come in, collaborating for the 15th year to organize the annual Walk-A-Mile (WAM) event. WAM is the longest-running event for heart health advocacy in this country.

Arriving really early in the morning, on a Saturday, I was excited to participate in this healthy NESTLE OMEGA PLUS Walk-A-Mile event. It has been a couple of months already that I've started my running and fitness regime, so anything related or advocating good health I would be there to support. The event was held at Lake Gardens KL, where an estimated 3,800 people attended. That's A LOT!

Fun Activities For All!

The Walk-A-Mile annual event only started at around 8.30am plus, but we were already sweating from the various healthy activities set up around the vicinity. There were game booths, and for those who are more active, they can partake in the aerobics and warm up sessions. Everyone had a big smile on their faces, as I saw families with kids, of all ages, from kids to the elderly. Now that's quite a sight.

“As Malaysia’s heart health advocate, we truly believe that your heart is in your own hands. Heart disease does not happen overnight but through years of living with these habitual risk factors. But the good news is that you could save a life in as little as 15 minutes as brisk walking reduces the risk of high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes,” said Chew Soi Ping, Executive Director, Sales, Nestlé (Malaysia) Berhad, in his welcome speech at the event.

Heart disease does not happen overnight. Therefore, it is so important to take care of your heart health now instead of later before the symptoms of heart disease develop. There are 3 key factors to holistic heart health management – physical activity, medical check-up and a balanced diet. It was with great pleasure then that I noticed a free health screening section over at the 15th NESTLE OMEGA PLUS Walk-A-Mile 2016. Without hesitation, I queued up and checked my blood pressure.

This year’s Walk-A-Mile concept featured various surprise challenges along the route, health screenings, lucky draws, and many more fun activities. We kicked off just before 9am, but truth to be told, I did feel it was a 'walk in the park' literally, as I've done way more strenuous activities in the name of health. Nevertheless for the majority of Malaysians, this type of brisk walk activities are the first step towards a better health.

How Does Nestle Omega Plus Help?

During the event, I did learn a thing or two on how to reduce the risk of heart disease. One way to reduce the risk of heart disease is to manage your cholesterol levels by adding plant sterols to your diet. Plant sterols can be found in minimal amounts in grains, vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts and seeds but you may have to consume very large amounts in order to meet the daily requirement of 1.2g of plant sterols in order to have an effect on your cholesterol level.

Nestlé Omega Plus has made it convenient to meet this daily requirement where two servings of Nestlé Omega Plus milk a day is all you need and it is equivalent to plant sterols found in 255 tomatoes or 126 carrots. Nestlé Omega Plus is the only milk that has Acticol, plant sterols that help lower cholesterol by blocking the absorption of cholesterol into the bloodstream.

It’s easy to take charge of your heart health. Walking for 15 minutes daily reduces the risk of developing heart disease symptoms (high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes) and it could potentially save your life. This is the reason why Nestle Omega Plus, as Malaysia’s heart health advocate, continues to urge Malaysians to be physically active with the 15th annual Walk-a-Mile in collaboration with YJM. I had so much fun that morning, and here's looking forward to more fitness and health oriented events coming up this year!
