Chinese New Year Set Menu @ Royal Gourmet Chinese Restaurant, Premiere Hotel Klang

Chinese New Year, or the lunar new year as I often hear it being called is just around the corner. A month plus to go, and there I was attending my first CNY review over at Royal Gourmet, Premiere Hotel Klang. It seemed a tad early, but the early bird catches the worm eh. This year, Royal Gourmet is offering three different Chinese New Year set menus priced at RM1,188+, RM1,688+ and RM2988+ for a table of 10 persons. Each set menu comes with one bottle of complimentary red wine.

Let's start off with the good stuff. To welcome and kick start the year of the Golden Goat, Premiere Hotel presented their Premiere Prosperous Abalone Treasure Pot, which I felt had to be one of the better ones I've had in a while. This pot of heavenly goodness is priced at RM688+ (which serves up to 10 persons). The ingredients are a mixture of quality Chinese foods, including braised 16-headed whole abalone, supreme sea cucumber, Japanese dried scallops, Canadian fresh scallops, golden dried oyster and eight other meaty delights found deep inside the pot.

Of course, any reunion dinner this coming Chinese New Year wouldn't be complete without the traditional Yee Sang as it is a symbol of prosperity and good health among us Chinese folks. Premiere Hotel's Yee Sang includes the Prosperous Salmon and Kwai Fei Abalone Yee Sang, Fortune Jellyfish and Salmon Yee Sang, Salmon and 12 headed Abalone Yee Sang and Jellyfish, Salmon and Kwai Fei Abalone Yee Sang. Served in two difference sauces (Traditional and sze chuan spicy sauce), it is available in medium and large size at prices ranging from RM68+ to RM188+.

On to the subsequent Chinese dishes prepared by the Royal Gourmet chef, we have various dishes to pick from, or if given the choice, I would have it all. Some of the combinations include the premiere five hot and cold combinations, braised baby abalone with golden oyster, steamed tiger grouper in home cooked style. and much more. Check out below on what we had that afternoon.

Premiere Five Hot & Cold Combinations

Usually the first dish of any Chinese New Year set menus, or any Chinese course dinner for that matter consists of some small bites, normally named the four seasons, or at Royal Gourmet, they call it their Premiere Five Hot & Cold Combinations. The dish consists of five instead of four dishes, from the smoked duck, scallops, stuffed mini crabs, and these small fried thingies, it did whet our appetite for more to come.

Seafood lovers should definately try their Steamed Tiger Grouper in Home Cooked Style and the Fresh Water King Prawns and Tiger Prawns Combination. I personally loved the prawn dish, as it came looking pretty and tasted exceptionally fresh. The skin peeled off the huge chunk of prawn meat easily. It went well with the sauces and spices.

We ended the meal with the customary rice dish (Steamed Glutinous Rice with waxed duck in lotus leaf) and some really sweet desserts in the form of their Golden New Year Cake and Pumpkin Dumplings. I found it interesting that the Golden New Year Cake was made of this very thin crust of yam, and a huge huge chunk of "nien kao". Usually the ones I've had did not put so much of these sweet gooey nien kao.

In conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebrations, there will be a Chinese musical performance during the Chinese New Year eve reunion dinner held at Premiere Hotel's Grand Ballroom. The musical performance features Gu Zheng, Yang Qin and Er Hu from 6pm to 9pm. Besides, on the seventh day of Chinese New Year as well, a Lion Dance performance will kick off at 10am to celebrate the Year of the Golden Goat.
