Chinese New Year 2015 Tai Thong Set Menus

My 2nd Chinese New Year set menu launch for the year 2015 happened last night, and it was a pretty cool affair. I had the good fortune to taste Tai Thong's sumptuous Poon Choy last year, and this time around, they did not disappoint. Usher in the year of the Goat by indulging in authentic Cantonese cuisine at any Tai Thong restaurant. Check out what they have to offer on their CNY menu this coming lunar new year.

Chinese New Year 2015 Tai Thong Set Menus - Golden Fortune Yee Sang

Springtime is a season of renewal, when new life springs forth after the cold and passiveness of winter. Similarly, Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is a time of fresh beginnings, a time to celebrate family reunion with traditional delights, auspicious dishes and sumptuous feasts.

Back by popular demand, bigger and better, Tai Thong's 2015 version of the Golden Fortune Yee Sang promises healthy fruit flavoured yee sang for all. Featuring sliced fresh star fruit, pumpkin seeds, chia seeds and black sesame, all thrown in to add more flavour and texture to an already yummy yee sang. I found this traditional fruity offering pretty refreshing.

Make it a sumptuous prosperity toss with Tai Thong's Japanese-inspired, crispy and crunchy yee sang. Symbolic of good luck, prosperity, health and all things auspicious, Tai Thong's Double Happiness Yee Sang has double the texture, and double the flavour with the addition of yummy golden chicken floss and crispy Enoki mushrooms. Available in half or full portions, both the Tai Thong Double Happiness Yee Sang & Golden Fortune Yee Sang are priced at RM68++ (half portion) and RM98++ (full portion) respectively.

Infusing the traditional poon choy with a contemporary Szechuan-inspired twist, Group Executive Chef Lee Wee Hong created the Golden Treasure Poon Choy. Using a fragrant sour and spicy sauce as its base, it was indeed something from what I usually have. It did taste a bit like the "chai buey" my mum used to make during Chinese New Year.

Filled with exotic spices, fiery flavours and a treasure trove of assorted seafood, including fish maw, sea cucumber, squid, conpoy, tiger prawn and dried oyster, Tai Thong's Golden Treasure Poon Choy is indeed loaded. Priced at RM298++ for 5pax, and RM498++ for 10pax, i think it's pretty reasonable. Advance orders are advisable and takeaway is also available.

On top of having the delectable yee sang and poon choy, the chef did prepare for us some other dishes to keep our stomach happy for the night. Before the mains were served we had the rather healthy and delicious double-boiled chicken soup with Chinese cordyceps. I did like the dish immediately following the soup, sautéed scallops together with succulent prawns, crispy asparagus, crunchy nuts and fresh lily bulbs. Simple yet so flavourful I wish I had the whole dish to myself.

We ended the meal with the customary rice dish, fragrant claypot rice with different types of savory waxed meat, and some Mini Eight Treasures Rice dessert.  The dessert comprises of glutinous rice, pumpkin, lotus seeds, raisins, dried apricots, as well as red and green cherries, all drizzled with fragrant Osmanthus syrup. Frankly speaking, it's my first time having a dessert as varied as this, with eight types of cooked fried fruits thrown in. Priced at RM9.80++ per serving, it is a rather interesting dessert to have.

For a different take on the classic 'Nian Gao' served as dessert, do try out Tai Thong's sesame coated glutinous rice dumplings filled with two sweet and sticky flavours, velvety soft red bean paste and homemade classic 'Nian Gao'. Each portion of 6 is priced at RM13.80++.

Tai Thong's Chinese New Year Set Menus this year are priced between RM498++ to RM1488++ for 6pax and RM798++ to RM2398++ for 10pax.
