Tribute To The Late Wong Choon Wah & World Cup 2014 Launch @ Mezzo Renaissance KL Hotel

Just last week, in conjunction with the upcoming World Cup 2014, Renaissance Kuala Lumpur Hotel took the opportunity to pay tribute to the late Wong Choon Wah, who passed away earlier this year. In his heyday, Choon Wah was one of the best midfielders produced by Malaysia. Malaysia’s soccer greats including Datuk Soh Chin Aun, Santokh Singh, Dollah Salleh and ardent football fans showed up and spent a few solemn moments honouring their comrade.

Wong Choon Wah (Chinese: 王春華, 31 March 1947 – 31 January 2014) was a Malaysian footballer. He competed for Malaysia at the 1972 Summer Olympics. In Malaysia Cup competitions, Wong played for Selangor FA, winning the championship five times. From 1972 to 1974 Wong played professional football with South China Athletic Association in Hong Kong.

It was a night of mixed emotions, as football enthusiasts and past Malaysia's football greats were present to give tribute to the late Wong Choon Wah. During the event, the late Wong Choon Wah's Malaysia football jersey was unveiled and framed up to be displayed at Mezzo Bar Renaissance KL Hotel.

Now I'm not exactly a very big follower of Malaysian soccer, but from what I gathered that night, Our national Malaysian football team used to be one of force to be reckoned with in the past. Being part of the 1972 summer Olympics was testament enough of Malaysia's prowess in football. I sometimes wonder what happened, with the decline in quality as compared to the past greats.
