Toh Yuen Chinese Restaurant Hilton Petaling Jaya Chinese New Year 2014 Set Menu

Did you know February 14th, Valentine's day this year coincides with the 15th day of Chinese New Year, or Chap Goh Meh? How's that for a double celebration of love! I was at Toh Yuen Chinese Restaurant @ Hilton Petaling Jaya the other day to try out their Chinese New Year ‘East Meets West Tale of Love’ set menu. The Chinese New Year promotion begins from January 8 to February 14 2014.

Braised Eight Treasures Soup

Immediately after the tossing of the customary Yee Sang for luck and prosperity, we were treated to this really nutritious Braised Eight Treasures Soup. Inside it has these luxurious ingredients, from crab meat to some other good stuff, totaling eight ingredients hence the name eight treasures. I was not informed what was inside, so forgive me for not being able to provide the ingredients.

Steamed Fillet of Canadian Cod Fish with Chinese ‘Chong Chao Hua’ Herb

Cod fish has always been a luxury I can't indulge in all the time, so when Toh Yuen Restaurant served out the Steamed Fillet of Canadian Cod Fish with Chinese ‘Chong Chao Hua’ Herb, it was indeed a very good dish for me. Fresh cod fish has always been a favourite of mine, as I like the smooth silky feel of the white meat, without having that usual 'fishy' taste. Good stuff.

Roasted Chicken with Ngar Koo Chips and Thai Chili Sauce

Next we had the Roasted Chicken with Ngar Koo Chips and Thai Chili Sauce. Nothing much to shout about, but I do appreciate the fact that the chicken came hot, and had these crispy skin which was to my liking. The Thai Chili Sauce was good to dip it in too. Give me a beef dish any day, and I will thank you for it, as I love the taste of it compared to the usual chicken dish.

Braised Broccoli with Sea Cucumber, Flower Mushroom and Fatt Choy

More fatt choy for prosperity. I think I have been having more than my fair share of this moss-hair-like strands of fatt choy recently. The customary Braised Broccoli with Sea Cucumber, Flower Mushroom and Fatt Choy came next. Served in sticky mushroom sauce, I did like the mushrooms, but have never been a fan of the sea cucumber. Yes, I know they are the expensive stuff.

Steamed Glutinous Rice with Dried Oyster, Salted Egg Yolks and Dried Shrimps

The Steamed Glutinous Rice with Dried Oyster, Salted Egg Yolks and Dried Shrimps was rather unique, in the sense that they actually use dried oyster, shrimps and salted egg yolks to give out the flavour most will like. Unfortunately I shy away from dried oysters, and just took the glutinous rice with the egg and shrimp. A pretty good dish to ensure you do not leave the table hungry, as glutinous rice really fills you up.

A special mention should be made to Toh Yuen Hilton PJ for the way they perfected the Deep Fried New Year Cake or usually referred as the deep fried 'nian kou' with yam. The Duo of Deep Fried New Year cake with Yam and Golden Fish with Red Bean Paste ended our nice lunch. I could not get enough of the deep fried new year cake, as it came served fresh from the kitchen. Unlike other restaurants, here the 'nian kou' literally flows out from the piece with each bite. Heavenly sweetness and indulgence.

For dining at Toh Yuen Chinese Restaurant Hilton Petaling Jaya, patrons can take their pick of the four celebratory banquet menus which are priced from RM1088++ for the Everlasting Happiness set to RM1688++ for the Sea of Prosperity set. Each banquet set serves ten persons and prices are subject to service charge and prevailing government taxes. Vegetarian options are available upon special request. Happy Chinese New Year people!
