Well known for its authentic Cantonese cuisine, Dim Sum and fresh seafood, Phoenix is a perfect place to experience the finest Chinese Cuisine. For those preferring a more private affair, the restaurant has a separate lounge perfect for a small get together with friends and family. The restaurant can open up to a banquet hall to fit up to 500 people for holding events, weddings and meetings.

Braised crab meat soup & assorted seafood
Braised crab meat soup & assorted seafood

It was a night of traditional chinese cuisine dining, as the majority of the dishes we had at Phoenix Restaurant wasn't exactly very unique. This isn't a very bad thing as majority of the diners would want a no frills traditional Chinese New Year Set Menu. Served first with the traditional Salmon Yee Sang, it was pretty good, but nothing spectacular. Again, it's the company that counts, and the night was fun with friends and family.

What was to my liking was the Braised crab meat soup with assorted seafood. Here at Phoenix Restaurant Holiday Inn Glenmarie, they do not serve shark's fin unless requested, hence the traditional braised sharks fin soup is replaced by this equally delectable dish. Not bad, with a very nice sweet savoury taste to the soup.

Wok Fried Ming Har Prawn with Spicy Chili Sauce

Up next was something everyone loved, the Wok Fried Ming Har Prawn with Spicy Chili Sauce. Served in a rather pretty setting, the prawns came in this spicy sweet chilli sauce, with large fresh prawns. I always like it when the prawns are fresh enough to easily peel off from the skin, making it easy to peel and eat. The sauce complemented the prawns really well, sweet and spicy with a hint of soy sauce taste.

Crispy Roasted Chicken with Spicy Plum Sauce and Prawn Cracker

If you have a craving for poultry dishes, then the Crispy Roasted Chicken with Spicy Plum Sauce and Prawn Cracker will cater for your tastebuds. Personally, this is one of the traditional chinese cuisine, and it does its job, filling you up with tender roasted chicken. The spicy plum sauce is unique in the sense that usually I get the Thai sauce with this dish. I definitely prefer plum sauce to go with the roasted chicken.

Steamed Mandarin Fish with Ginger Sauce

Another unique dish, served by Phoenix Restaurant is the Steamed Mandarin Fish with Ginger Sauce. Now the fish was good, with white meat that was silky smooth to the bite. However, the amount of ginger thrown into the sauce might not be to everybody's liking as it was a tad too heavy and drowned out the natural sweetness of the fish. Still a good dish though.

Braised Four Season Vegetable with Fatt Choy

Ah, more fatt choy for prosperity. The customary mushroom and vegetable dish came next. Served in sticky mushroom sauce, I did like the Braised Four Season Vegetable with Fatt Choy especially the mushrooms. The taste was a bit too sweet though, but I guess it's because the restaurant places a lot of importance on the flavours in each dish served.

Yong Chow Fried Rice with Tobiko

The Yong Chow Fried Rice with Tobiko was a unique twist to the usual fried rice served at the end before dessert. Unlike your normal fried rice, here fried dumplings were added, plus the oh-so-delicious Tobiko or fish roe. With each spoonful of the rice, I could literally taste the 'pop' from the Tobiko, and it was so good. Highly recommended, and it's a wonder why nobody else does this.

We ended the nice meal with some desserts in the form of the Fried Crispy New Year Cake and Crystal Rabbit Bun and the sweet Chilled Longan and Nata De Coco Duet. Now the rabbit shape buns were rather cute, filled with pandan fillings which went well with the chilled longan dessert. Overall, a good meal out, so be sure to book your reservations should you plan to have your Chinese New Year dinner here at Phoenix Chinese Restaurant @ Holiday Inn Glenmarie.
