Dragon Muay Thai Club Workshop

So there I was at my first ever Muay Thai workshop thanks to Nuffnang for the invitation. Aptly named Dragon Muay Thai Club, with the dragon themed shirts and equally intimidating Muay Thai fighters, the club located on the 4th floor of Wisma City Tower in Jalan Alor was where I spent my weekend.

The venue itself was rather nice, with lots of ventilation and light. A soft type mat material was laid out throughout the whole gym, which I guessed was to increase grip and probably lessen the hurt when I fell. We were introduced to the fighters, who were really accommodating when teaching us the basics of muaythai fighting. Bear in mind, it was really basic, but still I found it really tough.

Throughout the "intense" (to me) 2 hours session, we were introduced to Malaysian Muay Thai champions, Faizal "Golden Elbow" Ramli and Ali Yaakob. They were preparing for the upcoming fight at Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre on the 9th of October 2012. The other muay thai fighters were there too to guide us on the correct kicking and punching techniques.

We were taught the various techniques by the fifth runner-up of the first season of The Contender Asia, Zidov "Akuma" Dominic. It was all manly kicks and punches from then on. I did try to replicate what they did, unfortunately all I managed to come up with were feeble attempts at kicking hard.

I tried punching, yet it did not even leave any mark

After learning the few basic muay thai techniques, it was all about trying to do it correctly from then on. Personally, I can never get my feet as high as some of the fighters could. Probably I just need more practise. Everyone was having loads of fun though, between the sweating and panting. Check out some more photos I managed to capture of the 2 hour workshop as below.

Overall, it was a good workout session for me. On top of getting to sweat it out, and gaining some bruises on my feet from kicking the pads too hard, I would say it was a really good Muay Thai workshop. Dragon Muay Thai Club may not be located in the best of locations, but the enthusiasm, and seriousness of the trainers and the fighters more than makes up for it.

  8. For generations, people have learnt this martial art not only for self defence, but also for physical and moral well being. It is a good martial art technique that induces fear in the minds of others which is why scores of children and women are learning this invaluable Thai combat sport. Best MMA in Connecticut
