TP-Link Neffos C7 Smartphone Review

TP-Link Neffos C7 Smartphone Review

TP-Link, you may be forgiven for relating them to networking products and not smartphones. In recent times however, since 2016 to be exact, TP-Link has brought in the Neffos brand of smartphones running Android, and they’ve been going strong since. I was at the launch of their flagship Neffos N1 a month back or so, but today’s review isn’t about that. Instead, I have in my hands the camera-focused budget-friendly smartphone from TP-Link. Introducing the Neffos C7. Read on below.

How Does It Look?

Positioned as a budget-friendly smartphone, the specifications aren’t its selling points, as they were on the average side. Good for most casual smartphone users though. Holding the Neffos C7 in my hand, the design isn’t exactly memorable, but the body is rather well-built. Metal frame, with a plastic back, it feels light in the hands, weighing in at 157grams.

I like how the phone has this 2.5D curved glass, with a 5.5 inch IPS display, it’s pretty bright and big, good enough for most. The display is only 720p, so don't expect 4K quality at this phone's pricepoint. Neffos C7 is positioned as a selfie phone, so naturally, the front camera is pretty powerful, with a front facing camera of 8 megapixel resolution, there’s the Real-time beautify mode along with a bunch of other stuff.

Dual Nano-Sim , MicroSD Card Slot

The design and placement of buttons on the Neffos C7 is quite predictable, with the SIM slot on the left supporting a dual nano SIM. If the 16GB on in-built storage does not suffice, you could always insert a MicroSD card in place of the second Nano Sim for additional storage.

On the top there’s the now “rare” 3.5 mm audio jack. If you have not jumped unto the Bluetooth headset bandwagon, then you’ll be pleased with this. On the right, you get the volume rocker on top, and the power button below that. Holding the phone up, you get a MicroUSB slot for charging, and a nice set of speaker grills on either side of it.

Camera

Don’t expect too much from the quality of the camera even though the specs say its a 13MP rear-facing camera. I did try out the video using the Neffos C7 and it came out pretty okay. Outdoor images look fine, but the moment it’s dark, you may start facing noise. Even the selfie camera did not impress, but hey, for the average user, it’s good enough! Just don’t do snapping in the dark, or try taking a selfie at the bar on your Friday night chill-out sessions.

Performance

Powered by a MediaTek MT6750 octa-core processor clocked at 1.5 GHz, and supported by a ARM Mali-T860 MP2 dual-core GPU, we have 2GB of memory on the Neffos C7. The 2GB of memory will suffice for your usual day-to-day operation, but for heavy users or those who like to play games, well this mid-range phone is not for you. I like the 3060 mAh capacity battery though, as it comes off on the higher end of the battery capacity spectrum of recent smartphones in the market. The Neffos C7 runs on Android 7.0 Nougat, with the Neffos UI 7.0.

For cellular connectivity, the Neffos C7 supports up to FDD-LTE Cat 4 (up to 150 Mbps download, 50 Mbps upload). It has dual-band 802.11a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.1, and supports GPS/A-GPS and GLONASS for positioning.

Well, that’s that, the TP-Link Neffos C7 is your run of the mill entry-level smartphone, but it does the job of handling tasks thrown at it day in day out. I’m pretty pleased with using it as my second phone, and it’s exceptionally useful considering the camera is very decent, and the weight is pretty light. For the asking price of RM599, I think it’s a pretty good grab!
