Mikan Japanese Cuisine Maju Junction Mall
Even before stepping into Mikan Japanese Cuisine Restaurant in Maju Junction Mall, I've heard rather good reviews on their food. I was glad then when I had the opportunity to drop by their restaurant last week for a nice dinner with friends.

The interior |
Reaching Mikan Japanese Restaurant during dinner time, I found the Japanese themed restaurant to be really comforable with lots of dining space. There were a couple of diners there, and they seem to be really enjoying their meal. Greeted by the restaurant manager Casey, we were ushered to our reserved table. That evening, we took the "Omakase" which comes priced at RM100++.
"Omakase is a Japanese phrase that means "I'll leave it to you"
"The expression is used at sushi restaurants to leave the selection to the chef. It differs from ordering à la carte. The phrase is not exclusive to service of raw fish with rice, and can incorporate grilling and simmering as well. Customers ordering omakase style expect the chef to be innovative and surprising in the selection of dishes, and the meal can be likened to an artistic performance by the chef "
#1 Salmon Skin Salad |
The first dish that arrived in front of me was the Salmon Skin Salad. I was rather intrigued with this appetizer as I was told to ensure the skin gets crispy some preparations had to be done and left overnight. It tasted really good especially with the salad sauce. One plate wasn't enough for me though.
#2 Sashimi - Tai and Salmon |
Sashimi is a must have for any Japanese cuisine, and here at Mikan Japanese Cuisine, we were served with two types of sashimi, Tai and Salmon on this rather cute wooden box thingy. Personally I'm not a very big fan of anything raw. In fact I've been known to turn down sashimi in the past, but this round I tried these, and surprisingly it did not have the fishy taste which I was so afraid of. Janice did mention if it was really fresh, they won't have that fishy taste.
#3 Kaisen Koroge (Seafood croquette) |
#4 Tai soup (Snapper) |
The Kaisen Koroge (Seafood croquette) hit just the right chords for me, as the mix of seafood inside the fried "ball" like crunch croquette just oozes out in your mouth tantalizing the taste buds. After the few fried and raw dishes, we were served with the Tai soup, a clear soup with mushrooms, toufu, some clear-like noodles and the fish itself.
#5 King Prawn in Truffle sauce |
#6 Anago Terriyaki (Sea Eel) |
King Prawns in white truffle sauce, now that's a really rich dish if you asked me. It was all good, as we enjoyed it back to back with the next dish, the Anago Terriyaki (Sea Eel), It was all seafood that night, probably the chef was in the "seafoody" mood. I was wondering where's my meaty dish, which unfortunately did not arrive that night.
#7 Japanese ice cream with Butternut Pumpkin |
We ended the dinner with a small serving of Japanese ice cream with Butternut Pumpkin each. Probably great things must come in small packages, as the ice cream was really tiny. Overall I would say Mikan Japanese Cuisine in Maju Junction Mall does serve some really fresh and nicely prepared Japanese cuisine. Do drop by should you be in the vicinity of Jalan Sultan Ismail in KL.
