Miam Miam Cafe & Restaurant @ Gurney Paragon Mall Penang

It was a day out at Gurney Paragon Mall Penang for Janice and I recently, as we took the opportunity to check out the 'new to us' mall, as well as the much talked about Miam Miam Cafe. A separate post will be up on the mall itself so wait up for it. Miam Miam, the french Japanese restaurant which has been around since the opening of Gurney Paragon Mall last year is touted to serve the best French toast in town, as well as delectable sweet desserts.

The ambiance itself was a class above most restaurants and cafes in the vicinity, as Miam Miam Cafe had these chic french-like tables and chairs and decor. It did give out a dreamy romantic mood when dining there. Both Janice and I were warmly welcomed by the co-owners of Miam Miam Cafe and ushered to our seat to enjoy what would be a very filling lunch.

#1 Minestrone Soup - RM11
#1 Minestrone Soup - RM11

One thing to note about Miam Miam Cafe Gurney Paragon Mall, was the fact that the cafe isn't pork free. This is different from their other branch at 1 Utama, which is pork-free. Having said that, we kicked off our meal with the Minestrone Soup appetizer. Thick, flavourful soup, with arather heavy taste of tomatoes, the soupd did whet our appetite for the mains to come.

#1 Miam Miam Spaghetti - RM24.80
#2 Miam Miam Spaghetti - RM24.80

Up next, we were introduced to Miam Miam's siganture Spaghetti, aptly named the Miam Miam Spaghetti which comes looking pretty especially with the half poached onsen egg in the middle. The dish itself consisted of a two person portion of pasta with shimeiji mushrooms, eggplant, sausage, and my favourite, slices of bacons! It had this unique sweet, savoury taste, which complemented the springy pasta well. To have this dish, we were told to mix everything together ensuring the egg blended well into the dish. Good stuff indeed.

#3 "Riz Noir" Squid Ink Rice - RM28.80
#3 "Riz Noir" Squid Ink Rice - RM28.80

A rather unique dish, at least to me, the "Riz Noir" Squid Ink Rice was served in these cute ceramic type of bowls, which the owner did give a name for it and I conveniently forgot. Inside the bowl, we had black rice which was infused with squid ink, with assorted seafood and omu egg. I must say I love how the squid ink rice together with the egg left this fragrant taste to the whole dish. Inside my heart, upon tasting the egg I exclaimed "hey, this egg tastes just like the ones we get from fried oyster dishes!"

#4 Mac & Cheese - RM23.80
#4 Mac & Cheese - RM23.80

Cheese lovers rejoice! If you love cheese like I do, then the Mac & Cheese will fit just fine, as the combination of macaroni pasta and over flowing cheese combines to give you that 'oh so cheesy' feeling. The macaroni is oven-boiled, served with Miam Miam Cafe's selection of four special cheeses and bacon with crunchy Japanese breadcrumbs. I'm liking the food at Miam Miam so far, but better things are coming next.

#5 Souffle Au Curry - RM28.80
#5 Souffle Au Curry - RM28.80

With the fluffy soft egg topping, the Souffle Au Curry had this really nice texture to it. The egg was whisked into a foamy texture before being cooked and placed on top of the baked risotto. The risotto is sticky and cheesy in texture and really fragrant when consumed. Goes well with the japanese curry sauce inside.

#6 Miam Miam French Toast - RM16.80

Ah, we have finally arrived at what is almost synonymous with Miam Miam Cafe, as they are really well known with the Miam Miam French Toast. My initial thoughts when seeing the dish was that it had a really huge serving, served in a bowl, with maple syrup and a dallop of home made whipped cream. Love the texture of the bread as it is crunchy on the outside but fluffy and tasty inside. The bread itself felt sweet to the bite even before adding the maple syrup which just adds to that yummy taste. It is no wonder that folks heaps praises on this french toast.

#7 Creme Brulee - RM12.80

After the mains, it was a barrage of delectable desserts from Miam Miam Cafe. Beginning with the really sweet, yet creamy Creme Brulee, I must say Miam Miam's dessert had to be one of their plus points. The smooth and creamy baked custard was served with a hard caramelized top, which we could virtually tap on and watch it crack before feeding it into our eager mouth.

#8 Chocolate Banana Pancake - RM19.80
#8 Chocolate Banana Pancake - RM19.80

A sinfully delicious pancake dish, the Chocolate Banana Pancake came looking very pretty. Now I'm always a fan of pancakes, chocolates and bananas. Putting these three ingredients into one dish, with ice cream on top, and you have me craving for more. The Chocolate Banana Pancake was topped with premium gelato vanilla soft serve, bananas cooked in deep golden caramel sauce, garnished with toasted almond nibs!

#9 Valrhona Chocolate Souffles - RM18.80

#10 Vanilla Souffles - RM16.80

One of the very few, if not only one cafe in Penang that serves these unique french dessert, the souffles were a delight to be had. We had the Valrhona Chocolate and the Vanilla Souffles that afternoon. It came with melted chocolate on top of the fluffy souffle. Now this dessert is pretty new to me, hence I reserve my comment on my liking to it. Did you know Souffles are commonly served in fine dining restaurants, but at Miam Miam Cafe you can order it off the menu!

#11 Fruit Parfait - RM14.80
#11 Fruit Parfait - RM14.80

We ended our sweet lunch binge over at Miam Miam Cafe Gurney Paragon Mall Penang with a recommendation from the owner, the Fruit Parfait. It was a colourful mix of seasonal fruit and berries on top of a vanilla softee, being both sweet yet refreshing at the same time. Now, have you been to Miam Miam yet? If not, I do recommend dropping by the restaurant on your next trip to Gurney Paragon Mall Penang!

  1. Japanese? Name doesn't sound like it. I thought it was Thai or something. French-Japanese? Gee! What a combination. If French-Vietnamese, that would be pretty likely - they were colonised by them once.
