Musang King Durians
Musang King durians, what do you know about these "more expensive than normal" yellow colored, creamy sweet tasting durians? Well for me, I have no idea there's a durian variety named Musang King until recently when I saw some tweets from friends discussing about it. A quick check online got me educated on what the fuss is all about.

"There are many varieties, with names like Red Prawn, D101, D13, D24, XO, D2 and also Bamboo Leg (Thraka), but the one that is much in demand now, even rising above all is the Musang King (Mao San Wong in Chinese)."
“The flesh is yellow, and it's creamy with a fragrance that lingers long in your mouth. The quality is consistent and you cannot find fault from one pulp to the other.”
"The Musang King is originally known as Durian Kunyit, deriving its name from the yellow colour of the turmeric. Its place of origin is said to be Gua Musang, Kelantan"

The 3 statements above pretty much sums up what Musang King Durians is all about. Is the high price to get the Musang King justified? Well, I took the chance to drop by one of the roadside stalls just in front of Jaya Jusco AU2, in Keramat, Ampang on my way home last week. Janice doesn't like durians so I was on my own. A few words with the stall owner, and suddenly I had 1 Musang King Durian all opened and ready for me to savor.

The taste was really creamy, just like what I've read about online, and the colour is a brighter shade of yellow compared with other durian variants. It is sweet with a tinge of bitterness, bitter-sweet. I was told by the stall owner that the specialty of the Musang King was also its small seed, and this was proven as I found my durian to have really flat and narrow seed. That means there's more durian flesh to "wallop".
My Musang King Durian, check out it's yellow colour. |
At RM20/kg, this wasn't really cheap, but I was told the price can go up to RM35/kg at other spots in KL. Guess I won't be making it a habit to have Musang King durians daily. I enquired also about the prices for the D24 durians there. At only RM8/kg, I think I might just come back again soon to chomp into some good D24 durians instead! Have you had the Musang King Durians and what's your take on it?
I simply love durians!
ReplyDeletewah the last pic so tempting!
ReplyDeletenow a days durian also jual mahal haiz . . . am not a durian lover, so I got no worry about tehee! Nice 1 lol
ReplyDeleteI had that before - was told the name was Durian Kunyit... If I go KL, you belanja me makan or not? ;-)
ReplyDeleteIn SS2, Musang King is about RM 30/ KG expensive. But i always pay for the Buffet RM 15 eat all the durian you want.. except Musang king
ReplyDeleteIt has been a long time since I last had a bite at durians. Interestingly enough, I never ate the Mao Shan Wang on its own, only in the form of ice creams.
ReplyDeleteWenn, Durians are awesome :P
ReplyDeleteKen, let's go om nom nom some durians one day :P
ReplyDeleteKian Fai, ooo, yup the world is divided into 2, the durian lovers, and the non durian lovers. :P
ReplyDeleteLast time durians are so much cheaper.
STP, sure belanja you when you come down kl! No problem one lo.
ReplyDeleteDurian kunyit, yup that's the other name for this musang king.
Edwin, yup I heard in SS2 it's slightly more expensive. Haven't had the chance to try the buffet one yet :(
ReplyDeleteDarran, you should try the durian on its own! :) How is it in SG? do they sell durians openly by the road side as well?
ReplyDeleteOMG not durians again!! i don't like durians and really hate anything to do with durians!! hmmm, you better stay away from me after you have eaten durians, and don't touch me with your fingers that smell like durians too, hahahahahaha~~ :D
ReplyDeleteDuriannnnnnnnnn! Can't really remember the last time I had them :S

ReplyDeleteGOSH!! The yellowish... tempting!! I jz ate yesterday, those from my hometown... haha!! Yummy!! XD
ReplyDeleteYum!! Haven't try Musang King before. But I know it's the most expensive Durian.. =D
ReplyDeleteThat looks extremely sweet bro. I love durians a lot, must take my mum here, she loves durians too :)
ReplyDeleteTht's my husband's fave durian! I'd prefer red prawn... not as bitter as musang king!
ReplyDeleteI tried this type of durian before. Seriously, it is real nice! but really expensive >.<
ReplyDeleteI think I still prefer D24 haha!! Good also lah cos I save more $$$ and still enjoy my durians! LOL!
ReplyDeletebeen a while since i had me some durians! tak ajak la you tak senonoh
ReplyDeleteThose days only hear of D24 but now all the exotic names. RM20/kg is still OK..A few years back a colleague brought us to eat at his so called first class durians in Kepong near the temple with names like red, mao etc. Sorry cant remember all the names and price/kg and we paid pro rata RM50 each. Wow the most expensive durians Bananaz have ever eaten but it was ho ho ho liao.
ReplyDeleteHad a whale of a time indulging in those yesterday evening. Yeah, seeds are smaller, flesh a darker shade of yellow and a creaminess that's not too rich. Well-balanced, except for the price that is.
ReplyDeletenot a durian person but this year i ate more durians than i have ever done in my last 38 years. Musang King s definite the one to have. Even kiddo Shalom picks her durian. Its Musang King and only Musang King.
ReplyDeleteI describe musang king as a very concentrated durian. It's a lot sweeter, creamier and the colour is deep yellow than D24, for comparison. As for the bitter end, not all musang king has it.
ReplyDeleteThe price go up & down like the share market. This week seems to be high on supply so at some places, you can get rm15/kg and if lucky, rm12/kg
On average Musang King tastes better but that is only because D24 is inconsistent. The same tree will produce different quality in different season. On its best days, given right sunshine, right environment etc, D24 is better. Colour is only for the eyes. If it adds up to your enjoyment than Musang King it is.
ReplyDeleteI love to plant durian tree....when i notice that musang king's price for rm 30 per kilo...so i had planted 30 trees 6 month ago....now the tree is growing.i hope 5 yrs to go....maybe one of you durian lover might taste my durian.or i will invite u all to my orchard to taste musang king.see u ....
ReplyDeleteI'm a white guy. I love durian. I bought a Musang King from Tai Ping Traders in Auckland City, New Zealand, yesterday for $NZ 13.95/kg. It cost me $NZ 32. But it was worth every cent. It was strong and very tasty. The small seeds/stones made it 'fun' to eat more flesh. I like D24 too, and the Thai variety is okay, but Musang King is what real durian is.
ReplyDeletenow i know why they call it musang king tq...luv durian..but only 2 pcs my head b'came keneneng....
ReplyDeleteDid u try for the Durian Buffet?^^
ReplyDeleteSavoured every bite of Musang King durians at SS2 durian station, PJ few days ago. Guess how much I paid per Kg? Hmm... RM58/kg!!! Crazy price, isn't it?
