VISTA Eye Specialist - Live Life to The Fullest, Glasses Free!

I've been bespectacled since I was 10 years old. Throughout most of my life, there has always been spectacles perched above the nose, and I'm already so used to it I wouldn't have thought how life would be glasses free. Now with the latest advancement in LASIK technology, it's the go-to gold standard when it comes to vision correction for a variety of conditions including short and long-sightedness and astigmatism.

Why VISTA Eye Specialist?

For starters, I've heard good things from friends about VISTA, and that they have been in the industry for a very long time, with a proven track record. After my visit there, I was really happy with the extensive usage of equipments to test my eye. It's definitely a new experience and the outcome is a good one.

Upon arrival at the centre at The Curve, Damansara, I was surprised by the number of people waiting. It seems VISTA did have lots of folks waiting at the lounge and people generally trust the doctors there with their eyes, literally. Comfortable sofas and chairs filled up the area, and there's even a spot for coffee and milo. It did not take long before I was registered, joining the wait to see the doctors. It was a pretty pleasant experience with the staff that served me throughout.

Did you know?

I did my research on LASIK and this is what I learned below. Have a good read.

Combining No-Blade Laser (known as the No-Blade Intralase femtosecond laser iFS 150) which functions to create an even thinner flap in the cornea together with Advanced CustomVue technologies that precisely corrects vision, the LASIK technology is powered by iDesign, which incorporates a Wavefront ‘map’ that enables surgeons to measure the patient’s cornea with increased precision with 5 times more datapoint (detailed mapping of the eye’s unique imperfections) than the existing technology.

With the evolution from Standard Blade LASIK to now with the No-Blade LASIK, vision correction procedure is even safer with significantly less complication and speedier recovery to less than 24 hours. The LASIK also yields improved results that is potentially better than vision with glasses or contact lens. I couldn's wait to get my eyes prepped and checked on whether I was eligible to go for the LASIK procedure.

Dr. Aloysius Low, Chief Consultant Ophthalmologist, Cataract & Refractive Surgeon was present to give me a run down on what iLASIK is all about and also whether my eyes were fit for the procedure. Good news, I'm all good and can get the procedure done! Bye bye spectacles, hello glasses free Isaac Tan!

A little about Kid's Myopia Progression

I've had my first spectacles when I was 10 years of age, and ever since then I've always wondered if it was the right thing to start wearing spectacles so early on.

“With each visit to the optician, my kids are prescribed glasses with a higher power. How do I manage this? I am concerned! What can I do as a parent?”, have you ever had this thought? With 2 small kids at home, I'm always concerned, and during my visit to VISTA Eye Specialist, the doctor put my concerns at ease.

Understanding Myopia

Myopia is a condition where the image is formed in front of the retina of the eye, resulting especially in defective vision of distant objects. In normal vision, the image is formed on the retina. In Asia, 70-87% of school children and young adults are reported with myopia.

I met up with Dr. Vienne Tai Pih Yih, Consultant Ophthalmologist, Cataract & Refractive Surgeon of VISTA Eye Specialist and she helped to list down 10 things that parents can do to reduce progression of our kids' myopia.

  • Outdoor Activities : Spend two hours on outdoor activities daily (or at least 10 hours per week) as sunlight stimulates dopamine to prevent elongation of the eyeball. This is the most important measure to reduce progression of kid’s myopia.
  • Limit Device Usage : Long hours and excessive usage of devices can contribute to eyestrain which causes elongation of the eyeball (myopia progression).
  • 20-20-20 Magic : Every 20 minutes spent on the screen, look away at something that is 20 feet away for 20 seconds
  • Viewing Distance and Good Reading Posture: Ensure devices or reading material are at a distance of 25-30 cm (one arm length). Sit upright, avoid lying down or tilting your head abnormally.
  • Bright Ambience : Do not use devices or read while in dimly lit spaces. It will cause visual stress.
  • Avoid Eye Rubbing: Frequent eye rubbing may induce astigmatism.
  • Don’t Undercorrect Glasses : It can cause de-focus on the retina which will contribute to myopia progression and may also pose issues on learning and safety.
  • Adequate sleep : Children need an average of 7-9 hours of sleep daily for optimum eye development and learning ability.
  • Nutrition : A good diet consisting of vegetables and fruits provides beneficial nutrients for development of your child’s vision.
  • Myopia Control Program : Structured programme with the help of modern optical technology and lifestyle modification can aid in slowing down myopia.

Learnt a whole bunch about Kid's Myopia Progression

Kid's Myopia Progression, from the little I learnt with my time with Dr. Vienne Tai Pih Yih, was that without proper control, a kid's myopia condition may worsen, and the power will progressively increase. That's not what we want!

As a measure of good practice, parents are advised to observe their child’s eye usage behaviour as early as six months old and to arrange for regular eye examinations from three years of age to screen for any underlying eye problems or refractive issues and for early intervention.

The recommended frequency of eye checks for children and adults are :

  • Children (3 - 12 years) : Annually
  • Teens (13 - 18 years) : Annually or as recommended by your ophthalmologist
  • Adults (18 – 60 years) : Every 2 years or annually as recommended by your ophthalmologist
  • Adults (61 years and above) :  Annually or as recommended by your ophthalmologist
