H-Artistry Penang May 2014 @ SPICE

It was another super clubbing aka party weekend earlier this month when H-Artistry Penang 2014 treated more than 2000 Penangites to a spectacular mix of stellar acts from across the globe. I guess this might be the final few times I have to tenacity and energy to drink and party the night away with my fellow friends.  Check out my H-Artistry Penang 2014 Meet & Greet Session writeup first, which was held on the same morning as the party.

May 17 2014

Arriving at Penang as the first H-Artistry for this year, the stage at SPICE Arena featured with artists from the East and West; Australia, Taiwan, and Malaysia who took over Penang with an eclectic mix of pop, EDM, and electro house beats.

Arriving at the venue, it was a sea of red, as the theme at H-Artistry this year is red, hence everyone was decked in that colour. I myself had on this red striped / checkered shirt while the brother was wearing a red sweater/knit type of clothing. It didn't take long before the doors were opened, and the free flow began.

Decked out in elegant and chic hues of red and black, the H-Artistry Art of Mixing Zone was where the evening kicked off at 7.00pm, as party goers were treated to stunning performances by the H-Artistry dancers, accompanied by pumping lounge beats - as more party revellers made their way to the biggest party of the year in Penang.

Party revellers were then greeted by the host, Julie Woon, and were invited to the main party arena, a spectacular club-like environment which featured an amazing stage set-upand towering H-Artistry LED backdrops. I must say, the whole arena had a very futuristic, reddish visual creating lots of excitement to the already hyped up crowd.

As the room faded to black, individual lights lit to reveal Paperplane Pursuit who serenaded the crowd with their hits such as “Everybody Wants Somebody” and “Higher”. The Malaysian pop sensation wooed the crowd as they joined in to echo the lyrics of each song. The crowd was in for a surprise towards the last song by PPP as the H-Project DJ’s joined the pop trio to deliver an up-tempo collaboration on “Beats Of Your Love”.

The atmosphere of the room went through the roof as Taiwan’s EDM/mando pop band, Magic Power took over the stage, delivering a multi-genre musical journey like no other. The energetic Taiwan based band featured hit tracks such as, “Never Play By The Rules”, “Super Hero”, as well as “Love The Way You Lie” (originally by Eminem) in a surprise collaboration with Paperplane Pursuit.

The Australian queen of big room beats, DJ Brooklyn took over the deck and made her presence obvious as she dropped beats and tunes that got the whole arena pumping. It wasn't long before our very own Malaysian electro house trio Imma*Bleep*Youup came to stage waves of EDM drops, accompanied by stunning laser projections, which definitely delivered Penangites with nothing short of an epic super-clubbing experience.

Itw as indeed a good night out for me, one which I haven't experienced in recent months. Love the feeling of relaxation and chilling with old and new-found friends over some glasses of the good stuff. H-Artistry Penang 2014 at SPICE was truly a night of musical artistry, paired with a sensational experience befitting of an epic first H-Artistry series of epic super-clubbing parties for 2014.

World Cup Rocks With Kia On Tour 2014 @ Suria KLCC

Just the other day, I was at the World Cup edition Test Drive Kia on Tour roadshow held at Suria KLCC. It went on for a week from May 16th to May 21st with the finale being a lucky draw for the final two tickets to watch and experience FIFA World Cup live in Brazil. This was part of the "World Cup Rocks with Kia" campaign.

Arriving at the venue, being located the centre court of the ever popular Suria KLCC, it was already packed with people. There were fun and games in the football-themed atmosphere at the roadshows, with Kia models such as Kia Cerato 2.0 and 1.6, Picanto, Rio, Optima K5, Sorento and Sportage on display and available for test drives

World Cup Rocks With Kia - 2 The Test Drive Kia on Tour roadshows kicked off in March this year to celebrate the advent of the greatest sports event of the year, and to highlight Kia’s global partnership with FIFA World Cup.

A short information sharing is in order. The first roadshow was held at Queensbay Mall in Penang from March 6 to 9, followed by a stopover in Damansara, at The Curve from March 16 to 19 before Kia took the southern region by storm at KSL City Johor Bahru from April 4 to 6. I was at the last leg of the roadshow in Suria KLCC following the highly successful tours for this world cup roadshow edition.

Coming back to the "World Cup Rocks with Kia" campaign, I realized then that one lucky winner will walk away with 2 tickets to Brazil complete with flight tickets, accommodation, tickets to World Cup match and a city tour. How cool is that? The entries to the contest, 6,140 in total, came from the four Test Drive Kia on Tour roadshows where visitors who test drove or booked qualified to participate and stood a chance win the grand prize.

The lucky draw for the winner was picked by Naza Kia Malaysia’s Chief Operating Officer, Datuk Hafiz Syed Abu Bakar, at the final World Cup edition Test Drive Kia on Tour roadshow held at Suria KLCC. Congratulations to the winner Lee Fee Mei from Petaling Jaya, Selangor! Now I was beside myself with jealousy at that point, kicking myself for not joining the contest earlier.

Kopi Corner @ Jaya One Petaling Jaya

Jaya One has got its fair share of food and beverage, and Kopi Corner happens to be one of the few casual eatery serving some rather nice Terengganu cuisine. Back a couple of days, I took the chance to try out this rather new restaurant at Jaya One. Check out my review below on the food served.

Located on the ground floor of Jaya One, Kopi Corner opens for breakfast and lunch. When I arrived at the restaurant, there was already a rather sizeable crowd, there to enjoy the local cuisine offered. From my short conversation with the owner and chef who hails from Terengganu, I was informed of the signature dishes, one being the Nasi Lemak which was our first dish that afternoon.

The Nasi Lemak Fried Chicken came in a rather large serving, with fragrant coconut lemak rice, with very flavourful spicy sambal on the side. Always a fan of peanuts, they were not stingy with the ingredients, especially the kacang. The dish itself looked pretty simple, but served hot and fresh, it did make a good meal by itself.

Fried Mee Hailam - RM8.50
Fried Mee Hailam - RM8.50

Another one of their signature dish, we were served with Kopi Corner's Fried Mee Hailam next. The taste of the thick black sauce reminded me of the usual Hokkien Mee, but here it was a tad more watery. The sauce was a bit too salty, butit went well with the mee and ingredients which sort of neutralized the saltiness of the dish. It was basically a seafood dish, where inside we had prawns, fish cake, squid and vegetables. I miss my meat.

Keropok Lekor - RM5
Keropok Lekor - RM5

Original and fresh from Terengganu itself, the Keropok Lekor was purchased direct from the state, guaranteed authentic. One bite into it, and I could literally taste the huge amount of fishes which went into each piece, unlike some of our local keropok lekor which had more flour than fish. Served with the accompanying sweet and sour dark sauce, it complemented the keropok perfectly.

Wholesome bun - kaya and butter - RM4
Wholesome kaya and butter bun - RM4

It was lunch time, yet we decided to give one of their breakfast meal a go, in the form of the wholesome kaya and butter bun. Not unlike other toasted bread with kaya and butter, what sets this apart would be the sweetness and creaminess of the kaya. It wasn't much to shout about, but I would think this will go well with a cup of hot coffee.

Durian Rolls - RM10
Durian Rolls - RM10

We ended a nice lunch out at Kopi Corner with their delectable Durian Rolls. Deep fried rolls with thick, creamy real durian inside, I really like this dessert or appetizer snacks as referred to by Kopi Corner's owners. The durian flavour was really thick, not watered down at all, that it literally felt like I was eating fresh durian with some crunch from the deep fried 'popiah' skin. So the next time you're in the vicinity of Jaya One Petaling Jaya, do drop by Kopi Corner for some nice local fares.

WeChat Speed All Star Race Game

Are you on WeChat? Well, the past couple of days had me hooked on their latest game WeChat Speed which is available for download for iOS and Android devices. This time around, they have worked with various Malaysian celebrities, aptly named the WeChat Speed All Star Race, where the top three players under each team will get a chance to play live with the celebrity.

DiGi Malaysia Rockin' Network Drive Test

Just the other day, DiGi Malaysia held their Rockin' Network Drive Test for it's employees, opening it to media as well to experience the drive. It's a new nationwide 'Best for Internet Network Drive Test' with more than 600 of its employees participating over 26 cluster locations to test the telecom's brand new network. I had the opportunity to participate in the Klang Valley one, and it was a good experience.

Basically, the drill was simple, drive around in the car, use DiGi's data network, and feedback on how's the experience using it. This move was part of a "continuous effort by DiGi to mobilise its ambassadors on the ground and constantly review and provide feedback on how the network. DiGi provides mobile voice, internet and digital services to 11 million customers in Malaysia, a rather massive number if you asked me.

DiGi chief operating office Albern Murty mentioned in his speech that the company has completed a two-year network modernisation exercise to deliver an enhanced high quality internet service to Malaysians. The purpose of the Network Drive Test which is held on regular basis was to have their staff experience the improved network themselves.

I was there with Nuffie Adrian and fellow blogger TianChad, all set and ready to test out DiGi's network while driving from their HQ towards Sunway Pyramid and everywhere in between. We did evaluations on the internet on the highway, residential/commercial places and finally inside the mall itself.

In the past two years, DiGi has invested about RM1.5 billion in capital expenditure to modernize its network as well as expand its footprint nationwide, Albern Murty said.

"We have swapped every electronic part in more than 5,500 sites with brand new equipment, expanded our HSPA+ 3G network to more than 80 percent population coverage, and increased our own and jointly built fibre network to more than 3,200 kilometres nationwide," he added.

The results were pretty good in my opinion. We experienced uninterrupted data, running both video and radio streaming throughout the journey. We tested out the calls as well, without any calls being dropped, which was commendable considering I have always been rather skeptical of DiGi based on my past experience using it. I must say, after undergoing this short 'exercise', my perception has changed, and I'm pretty confident DiGi has improved by leaps and bounds following their network modernization.

Mother's Day Dinner @ Sushi King All Season Place Penang

This year's Mother's Day was spent back in Penang, where I treated my mum and dad to a nice simple dinner over at Sushi King All Season Place. The eatery was a stone's throw away from the family home, and this time around we had baby Martin with us. Check out below on what we had that evening.

Dad and mum didn't get much chance to savor the dishes from Sushi King, as in my hometown Penang, the local dishes are way better, at least in my opinion. However, I made it a point to bring them over here to try out some japanese sushi. It's mother's day after all, so a nice dinner would be befitting for the occasion.

Baby Martin seemed to enjoy every minute out of the house, especially since this round he got to taste some sushi. We ordered the new rice burger to share, one which comes recommended, especially the Yakiniku Rice Burger below.

Yakiniku Rice Burger - RM7 each or RM13 in a set with pumpkin tempura and miso soup
Yakiniku Rice Burger - RM7 each or RM13 in a set with pumpkin tempura and miso soup

The yakiniku rice burger which came with succulent pan fried beef in between the rice patties, accompanied by fresh lettuce and mayonnaise. Each burger can either be ordered ala-carte for RM7 each or in a set consisting of the burger plus pumpkin tempura and miso soup (RM13). I do like my beef, and with the yakiniku rice burger, I could get my fix of teriyaki doused beef strips which went really well with the rice patties.

Katsuni Set

We ordered the Katsuni Set Meal to share. Now I've tried this before where my brother Ivan introduced this delectable dish to me. The Katsuni set consist of deep fried chicken in special sauce served with sliced onions and egg. Served boiling hot, with a bowl of rice and miso soup at the side, I love this dish. It had a sweet savoury taste, with the sweetness you would expect from a teriyaki sauce.

California Hand Roll

Soft Shell Crab Hand Roll
Soft Shell Crab Temaki (Hand Roll)

The Califonia Temaki and Soft Shell Crab Temaki wasn't much to shout about, just two of the usual suspects. These will be the hand rolls I would usually order every time I'm at Sushi King, as it is handy enough to hold in my hand while munching down on the rather crispy ingredients inside. Oh, plus I love soft shell crabs!

Golden Ball
Golden Ball

The name of our next sushi dish was rather unique, Golden Ball. Unique but tasty, comprising of these deep fried egg stuffed with shredded crabstick. Good to munch on as a side order, being crispy on the outside and 'eggy' on the inside. The shredded crabstick with mayonnaise brought out the sweetness and added flavour to this dish.

Simple yet filling enough, the California Maki came with these lovely fish roe toppings, popping inside your mouth with each bite. Overall, it was a rather nice dinner affair over at Sushi King All Season Place Penang. It was a mother's day celebration after all, for my dear Mum, to appreciate all her love, and care all this years. Thank you mum, and here's to many many more Mother's Day and happy days ahead.

The Mix New Menu @ Holiday Inn Kuala Lumpur Glenmarie

It has been a while since my last visit to The Mix at Holiday Inn Kuala Lumpur Glenmarie (The Mix Holiday Inn Glenmarie Valentine's Day Set), more than a year back, discounting the CNY meal (Phoenix Chinese Restaurant @ Holiday Inn Glenmarie CNY 2014 Set Menu).  They recently changed some items in their menu, where I was invited to sample some of their new offerings. Check out below for my review on their dishes.

Shown on the first picture above would be my favourite dish of the night. Interestingly it is given the name Ryu. The cod fish looked every part as delicious as it tasted. Served with shitake, eryngii mushroom, boiled potatoes and vegetables, this is a must have at The Mix. I've always loved cod fishes, and if done correctly like what The Mix has done, it flakes easily with the touch of the cutlery, and literally melts in your mouth.

#2 Stuffed Mushroom - RM25
#2 Stuffed Mushroom - RM25

Served as an appetizer, The Mix prepared the Stuffed Mushroom with cream cheese, cannellini beans, with walnuts and olive on the sides. Unfortunately, I'm not a fan of stuffed mushrooms, deep fried mushrooms where it's soft and tasty inside yes, but not stuffed mushrooms. The taste was what you would expect from mushrooms stuffed with cheese, and beans. I liked the walnut flavour though.

#3 Coconut Chicken Strip - RM15
#3 Coconut Chicken Strip - RM15

#4 Greek Panzanella - RM25
#4 Greek Panzanella - RM25

I love anything deep fried, hence my overweight figure at the moment. The Coconut Chicken Strip which was served with accompanying honey soya dipping was the perfect way to start any meal at The Mix. Deep fried, then coated with coconut 'crumbs', the chicken meat was tender and had that succulent texture to it. A quick dip into the sweet sourish sauce, and I just had to have more. Of course, if you are more health conscious then go for their salad, the Greek panzanella, with generous amounts of tomatoes, cucumber, green onion, fresh basil and bread.

#5 Balsamic Glazed Beef Short Ribs - RM50
#5 Balsamic Glazed Beef Short Ribs - RM50

The moment the Balsamic Glazed Beef Short Ribs were served in front of me, I knew I had to have some of it immediately. Served with butter braised garlic, onions, zucchini and beans, the meat itself was what made the dish great. It had this sweet glaze on top, with tender 'fall off the bone' short ribs. I would recommend this dish for any meat lover.

#6 Beef Nagimaki - RM25
#6 Beef Nagimaki - RM25

Another meat dish. one which doubles up as an appetizer as well, the Beef Nagimaki was a unique dish. The description states it as a japanese beef roll with dashi soya sauce, but I feel it is akin to a beef roll with sweet teriyaki sauce. It had these asparagus sticking out, giving that green dash of colour to an otherwise whole chunk of meat. Good stuff.

#7 Lemon Grass Lamb - RM45
#7 Lemon Grass Lamb - RM45

Another good lamb dish, the Lemon Grass Lamb dish was served next. It came with brown rice and pumpkin curry on the side, unique yet not as appetizing to me as the huge lamb pieces in the middle. I found the lamb a tad too tough and salty for my liking, but the lemon grass herb did give it that extra flavour and sweetness.

#8 Osso Buco Style Lamb Shanks - RM50
#8 Osso Buco Style Lamb Shanks - RM50

It was literally an overdose of lamb for us that night, but the Osso Buco Style Lamb Shanks was indeed a feast for the eyes and stomach. Served with shallot risotto, spinach and arugula, the lamb shank is one huge piece of tender and soft lamb meat. I couldn't take in too much as I preferred my lamb being a bit tougher in texture.

#9 Poblano Pesto - RM35
#9 Poblano Pesto - RM35

The Poblano Pesto had a healthy mix of linguine pasta with spicy pesto, frish fritters, pepitas and garlic. It was tasty, with a heavy garlic and spicy flavour. The spiciness was just right for me, but a tad too much for some of my fellow foodies.

#10 Jivara Indulgence - RM30
#10 Jivara Indulgence - RM30

We ended an awesome night out at The Mix Holiday Inn with some sweet dessert in the form of their Jivara Indulgence. It was basically chocolate fudge sponge 'cake', layered with salty crusty bites and topped with milk chocolate peanut cream mousse. Do drop by The Mix should you be in the vicinity of Glenmarie Shah Alam, as they do serve some really yummy food there.
