Sarkies Corner @ E&O Hotel, Penang

After trying out the sweet pastries and cakes from The Bakery @ Sarkies Corner, E&O Hotel Penang, we then proceeded to try out the local and international dishes. Sarkies Corner, located at the Heritage Wing of E&O Hotel Penang, is not to be confused with their Sarkies a stone throws away. Today's post will be to share on the dishes we had one fine Sunday afternoon, from their Weekend Local Specialties and Ala Carte menu.

Arriving at the restaurant, I was pretty impressed by the colonial styled decor and ambiance, and was further surprised to see that they served local Penang and Malaysian food on top of some international dishes. It was indeed a nice place to sample some of the local delights.

Every Saturday and Sunday this June 2014, Sarkies Corner will be running their Weekend Local Specialties, from 12pm to 3pm with dishes going from RM20++ per dish. Do check out below on the dishes offered under the weekend local specialties menu.

Week 1: Roasted Chicken & Duck Rice

Week 1 : Roasted Chicken and Duck Rice
Dessert / Appetizer: Popiah and Pie Tee

Sarkies Corner's Roasted Chicken and Duck Rice happens to be one of their signature dish, which comes highly recommended by the chef and diners alike. Being the first dish served, it did meet my expectation, with the chicken thigh being tender, and very flavourful. The main dish went well with the two popiah and pie tee appetizers, all available in Week 1 of June 2014.

Week 2: Laksa Lemak
Week 2: Laksa Lemak

Week 2 : Laksa Lemak
Dessert : Bubur Pulut Hitam

Week 2 offerings from the Weekend Local Specialties were the Laksa Lemak and the Bubur Pulut Hitam. The Laksa Lemak was unlike our usual Penang Assam Laksa, tasting akin to curry mee, but with laksa noodles, with extra 'lemak'.

Week 3: Penang Prawn Mee
Week 3: Penang Prawn Mee
Week 3: Rojak Buah
Week 3: Rojak Buah

Week 3 : Penang Prawn Mee
Dessert : Rojak Buah-Buahan

The Penang Prawn Mee served by Sarkies Corner had these big prawns with spicy prawn based soup, making it one of the nicer noodle dish around. The locals call this dish "Hokkien Mee", and it's a must have local fare when you're dining in Penang. The Rojak Buah wasn't unlike any others I have tried, but I do like the generous serving of peanuts, and sauce in the dish.
Week 4 Dessert: Ice Kacang
Week 4 Dessert: Ice Kacang
Week 4 : Nasi Lemak
Dessert : Ice Kacang

For the final weekend of June, Sarkies Corner has whipped up their Nasi Lemak and Ice Kacang. I'm not sure how I missed out the Nasi Lemak shot, but the Ice Kacang is a welcome dessert on a hot day.

#1 Grill Grass Fed Sirloin
#1 Grill Grass Fed Sirloin

Always a fan of steak and red meat, it was a good thing Sarkies Corner offered international western dishes off their ala carte menu. I got to try out their Grill Grass Fed Sirloin, which looked way better than it tasted. The meat was a tad too tough, probably because the meat was well done, versus the 'medium rare' state which I much preferred. Served with the accompanying potatoes, it was an okay dish for me.

#2 American Burger
#2 American Burger

One of my favourite dish that day, the American Burger came served on a rather huge platter complete with fries and some greens. The patty itself, the most important aspect of any burger, was much to my liking, being both tender and soft. I was told they used some really good beef, grinded and grilled to perfection.

#3 Mamak Mee Goreng
#3 Mamak Mee Goreng

Another delicious, and very tasty dish served by Sarkies Corner would be their Mamak Mee Goreng. I've always liked my mee goreng being slightly wet without being soggy, flavourful, and spicy. Squeeze some of the lime unto the dish, and it's bound to satisfy your craving for the local delight.

#4 Beef Rendang with Rice
#4 Beef Rendang with Rice

The Beef Rendang with rice had this very nice smell to it, enticing us to try it out the moment it was served. The meat was tender enough, with very spicy rendang, going very well with the rice. A meal by itself, we were pretty much stuffed by the time this dish arrived, which wasn't surprising taking into account what we had the whole afternoon. Do drop by Sarkies Corner at E&O Hotel for some local delicacies, if you're in the vicinity, bored of the Penang street food and wish to dine in a restaurant with a nicer ambiance.
