Xiao Fei Yang Steamboat Restaurant Off Jalan Pudu

Fancy some piping hot spicy steamboat? Well, the other night, we had that and more over at Xiao Fei Yang Steamboat Restaurant. Located off Jalan Pudu, it was indeed a gem of a restaurant, serving really nice "ma la" spicy soup steamboat.

Arriving at the restaurant just in time for dinner, we went for the Yuan Yang soup base which was a combination of the Herbal Chicken Soup and Ma La Peppercorn Seed Soup. Those who cannot take the spiciness of the Ma La Peppercorn Seed Soup would welcome the herbal chicken soup with open arms.

Now the soup was really spicy with the Ma La Peppercorn Seed inside, definately not for the spicy intolerant people nor the faint hearted. The soup created a numbing sensation on our lips the moment we took it in. It was good that we took the herbal chicken soup as well, because it helps a lot in neutralizing the spiciness of our ingredients.

Unlike the usual steamboat eateries out there, on top of the spicy Ma La soup, what differentiates Xiao Fei Yang from the rest was the fact that they have these different types of sauce and condiments as our dippings. Mix it all together, and it really does give that additional kick to the overall taste.

Yummy meat ball, with "soup" inside, kind of reminds me of the Shanghai dumplings

There were ample dishes to choose from, ranging from RM4 to RM18 per dish depending on what we chose. We had straw mushrooms, vegetables, clear glass noodles, chicken, dumplings, fresh prawns, beef balls and many more. Attached below is their menu for the various prices so do check it out.

On top of the usual steamboat ingredients, we had a choice of thinly sliced meat as well. There was a choice of beef, lamb or chicken meat. We had all three that nice warm evening. These thin slices of meat reminded me of those "shabu shabu" styled steamboat. Check it out below.

It was indeed a really nice steamboat dinner, especially taken with a group of friends. The heat from the steamboat and spices gave all our faces a nice red glow by the end of the meal. Before we ended for the night, the chef for Xiao Fei Yang Steamboat Restaurant brought out their specialty dessert, some really unique fried yam and sweet potato doused in hot sugar before being dipped immediately into ice cold water.

  1. Not cheap. Usually places like this, too much msg for my liking. The name means - little flying goat?
