Fong Keow Bak Kut Teh Klang

We all know Klang is famous for it's numerous stalls of Bak Kut Teh, some better than others. Bak Kut Teh is so synonymous with Klang that the moment anyone mention they wanted a good bowl of Bak Kut Teh, we would usually suggest Klang. This round, a couple of us bloggers decided to crash in at Fong Keow Bak Kut Teh in Taman Intan, Klang to sample their dishes.

Fong Keow (Pottery) Bak Kut Teh Klang
It was a full house scenario on that Sunday afternoon

Reaching the location, I figured the area was the hotspot for bak kut teh restaurants as there were more than 5 bak kut teh restaurants around the vicinity. From what I gathered Fong Keow Bak Kut Teh was one of the pioneers running the business there since a long time ago. They have already established themself, hence the huge crowd turnout during the weekends. That day, we were presented with more dishes out of the usual Bak Kut Teh, do check out what we had below.

#1 Fong Keow Bak Kut Teh (1pax) - RM11.50

Fried You Tiou - RM1.50
#2 Fried You Tiou - RM1.50

The first dish, and also the main dish came out really fragrant, with one huge piece of pork bone amidst the many meaty pieces and vegetables. The Fong Keow Bah Kut Teh had a really nice soup, with just enough herbal taste to it. Personally, I like my soup done this way, without being too thick, nor too diluted. Throughout the meal, we could request for additional soup at no charge. Of course, any Bak Kut Teh meal would not be complete without the mandatory Fried You Tiou, which Fong Keow prepared in generous portions at only RM1.50. Dip it in the soup, and you're good to go.

Fong Keow Dry Bak Kut Teh (1pax) - RM13
#3 Fong Keow Dry Bak Kut Teh (1pax) - RM13

Before I came to KL, I did not know about the Dry Bak Kut Teh as Penang does not usually serve it this way. It then has become my favourite dish, due to it's delicious flavour. Cooked with generous amounts of pork meat, with lots of spices and black sauce, throw in some dried squids and ladies fingers, served in claypot, it's really hard not to love this dish.

Loh Bak (Small) - RM13
#4 Loh Bak (Small) - RM13

To me, nothing can better my mother's rendition of the famous Loh Bak, but Fong Keow's version wasn't bad at all. A good loh bak has to have lots of meat in it, with some pieces of fats to make sure it tastes soft and not too dry. Dip it in some chilli sauce for good measures.

Nestum Mantis Prawn - RM18
#5 Nestum Mantis Prawn - RM18
Assam Sting Ray - RM15
#6 Assam Sting Ray - RM15
Supreme Stock Drunken Clams - RM20
#7 Supreme Stock Drunken Clams - RM20

Next up were the seafood, which Janice loved. I was rather surprised when we were served with the Assam Sting Ray, Clams and the Mantis Prawn, as I thought we were only going to have meat that afternoon. It turned out to be a good surprise as the dishes were really good especially the Nestum Mantis Prawn. Served in a bed of Nestum, with spices, it really brought out the flavour. I was not very fond of the clams though, but it's good to note there weren't any fishy taste to it. As for the Assam Sting Ray, I thought it was well done, with enough assam curry taste to tantalize your tongue.

Sauteed String Beans - RM15
#8 Sauteed String Beans - RM15
Twin Mushroom with Oyster - RM18
#9 Twin Mushroom with Oyster - RM18

We ended the meal with some veggie dishes which came in the form of the Sauteed String Beans and the Twin Mushroom with Oyster dish. I did not really fancy the strong beans this time though, as I felt it was a tad too overcooked leaving the string beans feeling soft and mushy. The twin mushrooms were good though.

Now I know how Fong Keow Bak Kut Teh managed to stick around for so long, even when faced with fierce competitions from the other restaurants, they do serve some good food. Remember to drop by this restaurant should you be in the vicinity of Klang area and wish to have a satisfying bowl of Bak Kut Teh.
