TGI Friday's Wangsa Walk

Thank God It's Friday! Each time when Friday, these words come to mind. TGI Friday's an international franchise focusing on casual dining serving mouthwatering American classic dishes, from appetizers to memorable burgers and delicious desserts. I happen to be at one of their branches in Wangsa Walk the other day for a fellow colleague's farewell dinner.

This wasn't my first time here, so I roughly knew what to expect. I haven't tried all the dishes yet though, and since we were in a group, I got to have a sampling of other dishes ordered by my colleagues. TGI Friday's dishes have always been in "American" sizes, meaning if you're not a big eater, then you might not be able to finish the serving because it's really huge. Anyway do check out some of the dishes we ordered that night.

#1 Grilled Lamb: Succulent marinated grilled lamb, served with seasonal vegetables and our crispy fries.
#2 Fish and Chips: Three portions of fish filet battered and fried to golden brown. Served with crispy fries and tartar sauce.
#3 Chicken and Shrimp Diablo: Tender, seasoned chicken and shrimp sautéed in olive oil, then blended in a fiery tomato Diablo sauce. Served on linguine pasta with freshly-grated Parmesan cheese.
#4 A vegetarian special made dish for my colleague.
#5 Chicken Fingers: Hand-battered chicken tenders, golden fried and served with crispy fries. Honey Mustard dressing for dipping.
#6 Tennessee Steak: A thick 10-oz. Australian chilled air flown grain-fed steak, seared and chargrilled to ideal tenderness. Served with seasonal vegetables, cheddar cheese mashed potatoes and Tennessee sauce.

Of course, after a heavy meal like this, there must be desserts to sweeten our taste buds. There was something new on the menu called Desserts Mini, and it does look cute, coming in these small cups. Check them out below and tell me if they don't look cute to you.

Desserts Mini: Sneakers Treat: Decadent, sweet chocolate custard covered with chunks of chewy Snickers bar.
Desserts Mini: Strawberry Parfait: Delectable, creamy-rich vanilla custard crowned with a juicy-fresh strawberry.
Desserts Mini: Mocha Latte: Luscious mocha custard topped with fresh whipped cream and dusted with cocoa powder.

As for me, I ordered my all time favourite dessert from TGI Friday's. It was none other than the delicious, the calories laden, Friday's Sundae! I was a bit disappointed with the lack of passion put into the preparation for my favourite dessert this time around. It had too little caramel sauce!

Friday's Sundae! Vanilla ice cream topped with hot fudge, caramel sauce, nuts and whipped cream.

Overall, it was a really hearty meal. I did not take down the prices of each dishes because it was my ex-boss's treat. Thank you Shanti! Now who doesn't love getting treated, especially with such delicious food.

The star for the night, Diana and her really cute son!

To Diana, my dear colleague who's leaving the company, good luck and well wishes! We'll miss you, forget us not. Even though you're no longer fighting the same fight in the same company, you know we still love you!

Secret Recipe Jusco Wangsa Maju

Secret Recipe, which of us have not tried this franchise eatery before? I for one have tried this place in a few different locations before. It serves cakes and fusion food in a serviced environment. I've always related Secret Recipe to yummy cheese cakes. Well, the other day I was with the Mrs at Jusco Wangsa Maju doing some groceries when we decided to dine at this particular Secret Recipe outlet.

I've always wondered why Secret Recipe is always packed with customers, or at least the one in Jusco Wangsa Maju is. Probably there isn't much choice of restaurants to dine here. Personally, I somehow didn't really like spending top dollars for a simple dish but that night was an exception. They call it food therapy, I call it "spending a little to de-stress from a long day at work on some food".

The environment, simple and clean

As usual, on top of the main dish, I just had to order a slice of their famous cheese cakes for dessert. This time, I tried one of the cakes which I've never ordered before. Check out the dishes I ordered below.

#1 Hazel Cheese Cake - RM 6.50

The Hazel Cheesecake, made up of hazelnuts, cheese and moist chocolate. I find it really delicious, without the excessive cheesy taste. One of the notable points of this cake was the generous amounts of hazelnuts they stuffed in it, we could bite into the nuts with each bite!

#2 Grilled Black Pepper Chicken - RM 12.90

The chicken wasn't bad at all, it filled my hungry stomach nicely. Usually the dish comes with rice, but they happened to run out of rice that night so it was replaced with some chips which was fine for me. But is it special enough to warrant a shout out? Unfortunately no, just your average run of the mill chicken dish.

#3 Tom Yam Kung - RM 9.50

My partner ordered this. Fresh from our langkawi trip where we tried this really nice tom yam soup, she immediately ordered this, and regretted after.  I'm not so sure why the soup was so diluted, probably the time was already 9.30pm and they ran out of soup and added water instead? Maybe not. I'm not sure, but we actually preferred if the tom yam was thicker.

#4 Chocolate Banana Shake

Chocolate banana! This combination is an acquired taste, and not everyone likes it. My partner for one, says the taste is weird. For me nothing beats a cold drink of chocolate blended with banana. I love to order this drink no matter where it's being served. This particular drink served here was just up my alley, not too sweet nor too thick. Good stuff.

Overall, a good meal. Nothing to shout about, and I'm sure most of you have already tried this franchise one time or the other. If any of my friends asks me what's so nice about Secret Recipe, my reply would be to "Go for the cakes".

TimeOut KL Cocktail Mixing Workshop

Courtesy of TimeOut KL and Classic Fine Foods, I got a chance to try my hands at some cool cocktail mixing. I've seen on numerous occasions where the bartender would prepare these sweet delicious cocktail but never had I the chance to pour or mix it myself until today. The cocktail mixing workshop was a 2 hour crash course session held at this cool bar/wine post named Social@KL over in G Tower Hotel, KL.

So there I was at 7.30pm sharp waiting for the workshop to kick off. I had the chance to wander around the bar, checking out its extensive selection of wines. I was really amazed by the number of wine bottles available at this place. Check out the pictures below.

Huge selection of wines and liquor

The workshop kicked off at 8pm, with a brief introduction by Kim Choong from TimeOutKL. This workshop costs RM750 for 2pax, but it was complimentary this round. For this, I'm grateful to these kind folks. There was a demonstration on how to mix the 2 chosen cocktail for the night, namely Spicy Mango and Lychee Margarita. We were even given the opportunity to prepare these delicious drinks ourselves.

Our main ingredient to mix the drinks, tequila!

#1 Spicy Mango

Ingredients:
20 ml Monin Mango Fruit Mix
20 ml Monin Sweet and Sour
20 ml Monin Spicy Mango
40 ml Tequila
10 ml Orange Liqueur
(garnish with bird eye chili "cili padi")

Ingredients
Instructions:
Mixing was done in a shaker with all the ingredients poured in before giving it a good shake. The ingredients had to be the amount stated, or the taste would come out different.

Spicy Mango
The drink was prepared in just a few steps. We were then served with a glass each. How was the taste? It was spicy and sweet, both taste blending in with the tequila. I did not really get the taste of the mango, as it was drowned by the spiciness and tequila. We were to drink the drink immediately so that the ice do not melt and mellow out the taste. Pretty good stuff if you asked me, my partner commented it was a bit too spicy for her liking though.

#2 Lychee Margarita

Ingredients:
40 ml Monin Lychee Syrup
10 ml Monin Triple See Liqueur
40 ml Tequila
40 ml Monin Lime Juice Cordial
(garnish with lychee)

Instructions:
To mix these ingredients, we had to utilize the given blender, as the ice had to be blended in with the mixture. One tip here, we placed the ice cubes in the glass first so that the margarita glass is kept chilled. Heat from our hands and the atmosphere may warm the drink causing the flavour to run. Again, it was a rather simple task of mixing in the ingredients into our blender before pouring it out into the margarita glass.

Lychee Margarita
This drink was different from the first, and if we were to characterize the spicy mango as being the masculine drink, then this lychee margarita would definately be the feminine drink. The lychee together with tequila gave out a very sweet flavour. A dude from my table actually commented, this I quote "This would be the only time I get to have this drink without sacrificing my manly machoness!". It got us laughing, such would be a man's ego.

The Lychee Margarita goes perfectly with my perfect lady, Janice

Yours truly trying his hand at mixing. Don't mind the flushed face, I had a little too much to drink.

Overall it was an extremely informative night. I found out mixing cocktails are not really hard, it's the technique that needs to be perfected along with an eye for detailed liquor measurements. All of us had good fun, and I got to meet up with some really funny and interesting new friends.

A photo for the record, we had rather tipsy folks here

"One tequila, two tequila, three tequila, floor.."

Underwater World Langkawi: Largest Marine & Freshwater Aquaria

There are a couple of good aquariums or Underwater Worlds as they call it over in KLCC, and our neighbor Singapore. There's one in Langkawi too, and since when you're at Langkawi, other than the beaches, and historical spots there isn't much else to explore so that's where we headed to last weekend. I present to you Underwater World Langkawi.

Underwater World
Tickets

The tickets weren't exactly cheap, and my past experience to this aquarium 8 years ago told me not to expect too much of this place. My hunch was correct, the place wasn't much to shout about. Anyway, a quick Google search got me the information I need about this place to share with you.

Underwater World Langkawi is located at Pantai Cenang on a 6.2 acres land. You can't miss that big white building, with three smiling dolphins swimming around a globe, on top of the wording saying, " Underwater World Langkawi". It is one of the largest marine and freshwater aquaria in the region. There are over 5,000 varieties of fish and other exhibits from 500 species being displayed in over 100 tanks. (source: http://www.langkawi-beaches.com/underwater.html)

While walking around the place, I did not manage to capture a lot of photos, because it wasn't really huge to start with. I wonder why do they call it the largest marine and freshwater aquaria in the region. Anyway check out some of the photos of the animals and marine life which I found rather interesting and would like to share here.

Underwater World
#1 A lizard of some sort, it was rather docile enabling me to capture a close up photo
Underwater World
#2 African Penguins: These penguins reminded me of the movie Happy Feet, especially when they waddled along
Underwater World
#3 Blackhopper Penguins: If you've watched the cartoon "Surfs Up", you will recognize this as a character from the movie

On further exploration of Underwater World, I was greeted with more underwater creatures. There were a couple of birds here and there, with a touch pool where we could touch the fishes. There were a whole lot of extremely large fishes swimming around too.

Underwater World
#4 Huge ass cat fish
Underwater World
#5 Stonefish: I found this fish rather unique, can you see its eyes bulging out?
Underwater World
#6 Some rather slow moving sharks swimming around
Underwater World
#7 Spotted Stingray: these were rather large, gracefully gliding around

Then there were the smaller marine creatures, from small colorful fishes, to lobsters, starfishes, jellyfishes, and exotic prawns.

Underwater World
#8 Long Spine Sea Urchin
Underwater World
#9 Another species of sea urchin
Underwater World
#10 Starfish looking like its lazing around, just hanging
Underwater World
#11 Cerianthus Worm

Overall, it was a rather dull trip to this underwater world. Yes, there may be a whole lot of exhibits, but the facilities in which they were kept looked rather old and run down. But if you've never been here before, by all means, do drop by Underwater World Langkawi for a glimpse of the vast creatures living in our world's oceans.

Truly A Shopper Finale At Fahrenheit 88

Hopping on invites from Henry Lee, I was at Celsius Bar, Fahrenheit 88 tonight to catch the live finale for this reality shopping show called "Truly A Shopper". Forgive me for my ignorance, but i did not know about the show until I was informed by a few fellow bloggers. Anyway I've been told this reality show is quite the rage nowadays. Tonight's finale will determine the one shopper who will walk away with RM10k in cash, so you can bet on the shoppers going all out to win!

The TV Hosts
Judges

From my brief knowledge on this online reality shopping show, "Truly A Shopper" celebrates the art of spending. The online show's episode ran and culminated with tonight's finale where one shopper will emerge the winner of the RM10000!

The winner, Swing Chan

Do check out their webisode on the link below. I personally went through a few of their episodes, and it was really quite entertaining.

http://www.trulyashopper.com/webisode

Anyway, what interested me most tonight was the food as I was pretty famished by the time the show ended around 8.30pm. The moment the finger food and buffet spread was laid out, yours truly was already first in line for the food.

Some fried rice, vege, curry chicken and spaghetti
Salads for the health conscious folks
Desserts
Pizza anyone?

The group of bloggers that attended tonight were awesome! Celsius Bar was cool enough to let us have a big corner table with sofa for us to lounge while eating. Overall it was a nice night, not superb as the event was rather messy in the beginning. Bloggers and media weren't allowed to hang out in the main lounge which wasn't really nice. In the end we got the corner though.

The bloggers! L-R: Jayren, Yee Ing, Cayenne, Kah Mon, Janice, Me, Samantha, Jackie, Sophia, and Joshua Law

As for me, I'm just happy I got to meet more new friends, and also had a good meal to fill my stomach before heading home a happy man. Let's look forward to the next installment of "Truly A Shopper".
